We went to the Jazz Playhouse on two consecutive nights during a recent trip to New Orleans. The second night featured James Rivers and his band; absolutely one of the most entertaining and musically innovative evenings we have ever had. Kudos to the Jazz Playhouse and BRAVO to James Rivers - a truly exquisite musician and consummate entertainer.

My husband and I are musicians and we wanted to catch a jazz performance that was quintessential New Orleans. We walked in at about 7:15 (no reservation) and were given great seats against the wall. We felt like we were too early, but I think it helped us secure good seats. :) We saw the Ed Perkins Jazz Band, who were phenomenal. Wes Anderson on saxophone was a treat, as my husband has CDs that he has played on. Ed came around to all of the guests before the show and shook our hands and asked where we were from - very cool. The band played really well together and we were really impressed with all of them - especially the pianist. They played a mix of southern jazz standards (Georgia on My Mind), some soul music (Marvin Gaye, etc.) and straight up jazz standards. We stayed for two sets and left at about 10:30 (the band started promptly at 8:00).

We had several drinks as well as a bottle of wine. We shared two appetizers that were, in our opinion, just ok and overpriced. But the musical experience is what made this a superb destination for us on our first trip to NOLA.

We came & saw the Brass a holics here. Fantastic little venue. Everything was fab!!!! It was also a break from the craziness of Bourbon Street. A lot more classy too.
Definitely recommend!!!!

We have been here many times and it is always such a treat. This particular evening featured a quartet with an amazing drummer. Later they were accompanied by a most amazing singer. She walked up, put her finger on her lips and said, SHHH. The whole place quieted and she began to sing so beautiful! I feel jazz is such a lost art. After walking up and down the party bars on Bourbon, this place is such a relief. You can tell the people taking in the music were there solely for that reason and not to get drunk off hurricanes. Our server was okay (only downfall). They specialize in a variety of mixed cocktails. I ordered a dirty martini and they delivered.

My husband and I got here last night and it was packed... luckily a couple was just leaving so we got a table. We didn't have to pay anything to get a table but we did order a couple of drinks each. The band was very good and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly, staying for a set and a half.
Our waitress was friendly and attentive. Drinks were ok.
The place is tucked away off the street so you have to enter the Royal Sonesta Hotel entrance and it's to your right.
A cool little place cut off from the drunkenness and debauchery that defines Bourbon Street!
