Take the streetcar and enjoy a lovely walk around this district. Picturesque and grounded in a sense of place that is specific and worth the visit. Bus 11 was a quick and cheap way back to the French Quarter area.

If you like great architecture, colonial style mansions, delightful boutique style shops, then this is the place to go. It was great just wondering around this delightful naibour hood

A wonderful morning spent with Mary E as our tour guide. She is a wealth of knowledge and you can tell she loves her job. The garden district is so beautiful and so peaceful. Thank you Mary E. We loved your tour !

There are many large, gorgeous houses in this area, and we had an enjoyable couple of hours walking about. There is also a typical New Orleans cemetery, which is also worth seeing.

The Garden District was originally home to a number of plantations but later rich Americans staked out property there in order to distance themselves from the Creoles of the French Quarter.

In 1833, it became part of the city of Lafayette, which explains why the cemetery across from Commander's Palace is known as Lafayette Cemetery No. 1. It was annexed into New Orleans in 1852.

Originally, there were only a couple of homes per block, with the structures surrounded by large gardens, which led to the name. The Garden District is considered to have one of the greatest collections of historic mansions in the South.

The St. Charles Streetcar is a great way to get a feel for the Garden District. You should get off at one of the stops and venture off St. Charles.
