We stayed for 12 days at Gecko House in Costa Rica and had a fantastic family vacation. We were looking for an opportunity to reconnect with each other especially with our teenage daughters whose lives are so busy. We wanted a mix of peace and quiet and fun adventure and boy did we get it. We used Gecko house as home base most days branching out on adventures in Samara, Playa Guillotines, San Juanillo and one very long day to Monteverde. There were also several days were we stayed at the house just listening to audiobooks, swimming in the amazingly clean pool and playing epic family poker tournaments. The joys of the house and location are many including-
The house is clean and bright open to the amazing surroundings
The landscape is breathtaking and every breath brings you closer to nature
The house is so quiet and private. Ok not really quiet but the noise of geckos and birds and howler monkeys sure beats traffic television and people
The pool is great we even saw a mama and baby howler monkey while we were in the pool
We had an incredible bond with a German Shepard who we later found out was named Lobo and who became our Costa Rica dog. He protected us, played with us, and even went to the beach with us. We Miss Lobo!
There are a few cons with the house (some just reflective of life in the jungle)
Lots of bugs, bats and geckos kept our girls screaming but really added to the adventure. If you can't handle the creepy crawlies that come with being this close to nature this might not be your spot.
The driveway and road to Gecko House are tough and require 4 wheel drive I think. Also I'm not much of a hiker but I really think you need a car to stay in this remote location.
There aren't many road signs or guideposts and the directions we received were a bit vague so ask for very clear directions and don't arrive after dark if you can help it because we were pretty lost for several hours when we arrived.
The kitchen is a bit sparse with no oven or microwave and we would have loved to have a grill or bbq.
We didn't get to meet the owners (they were out of town I think) but we had no issues that needed their attention and the caretakers made sure the house was ready for us.
We are so grateful for this amazing house and the adventure our family will always remember.
