Owner description: President Harry S Truman took America from its traditional isolationism into the age of international involvement. Despite his power, he never forgot where he came from. Today, visitors can experience the surroundings Truman knew as a young man of modest ambition through his political career and final years as a former president.

* My review is based on just being on the grounds. I didn't have time for a tour inside.

So that said, the site & house look pretty normal. Street parking is plentiful around the house. House is part of the NPS and you get tour tickets in the city center of Indepence which is about 5 minutes by car east from the house.

Conducted by National Parks - circa 30 minute tour that walks you through the house that Harry and Bess Truman lived in. Dressed to reflect the period it portrays a simple but rich lifestyle. Guide was very informative with a touch of dry humour. The house had hosted all subsequent USA Presidents and celebrities such as Bob Hope. A true time period experience.

I found the house, neighborhood and history quite enjoyable. I learned a fair amount, but the tour was more responsive than a provider of information up front. Be advised that you have to go to a visitor center ~1/2 mile away to reserve your slot and there's only street parking.Visit HST's aunt's home across the street ... the film and pictures are truly interesting.

The home is set as it was at the time of Bess Truman's death. It was built by her Grandfather and presents beautifully the craft of the time. The guide was interesting and points out how simple life was after Harry and Bess Truman left the White House. I highly recommend this tour

First, you must get tickets at the visitors center a few blocks away. Plan to stop there earlier than you want to tour the house because they only take small groups and you must be with a tour guide. We had to wait several hours before our tour time, but that gave us plenty of time to visit the Truman library and grab lunch. If you have a child that is in the fourth grade, there is a national park pass (Every Kid in a Park) that they can get online that made the whole experience free for our family. You could tell that our tour guide loves his job. He said that the tour usually lasts around thirty minutes, but his lasted an hour. He gave a lot of information, interesting facts, and took the time to get our children involved in the tour. I would not recommend taking small children or people who have a hard time standing for long periods of time. You will be standing the entire tour, and are asked not to touch things, and to stay on the designated carpeted areas. One of the most interesting parts was the contrast in the private areas of the home (like the kitchen) versus the areas that visitors would have experienced. The kitchen was very simple and not what I would have expected for a former President. The kitchen made them seem more like normal people with its worn linoleum floors, simple furnishings, and calendar hanging on the wall with each day checked off. The more formal areas of the house were very elegant in their design and furnishings. I wish that we would have been able to see the upstairs. I'm interested to see how the other private areas of the home were decorated. Definitely worth the stop if you are in the area.
