I am a big fan of the Selous, because it is wild and has a great variety of environments. Tarangire is close. It is not anywhere near as 'wild', as it is on what the Tanzanians call the 'northern safari cicrcuit', which includes Serengeti and Ngorongoro, the big hitters. So it gets a lot of tourists. But it has a lot of space, and the animal variety just rocks. Loads of elephants, and nice little finds like mongeese (abundant) and jackals just like that. Good one - close call with the Selous.

Tarangire National Park belongs with her 2600 km2 to the smaller parks in Tanzania. The nature and rest is overwhelming. Wide views, many imposant large and century aged trees fill the landscape. The park is famous for its large number of elephants. Even 5000 walking there around, with a really dangerous agressive caracter. This is too the only park where the lions climb into the trees to get a better view over the landscape. Access to the Tarangiri National Park is not really cheap. Calculate with $ 100 per person per day. Tourists who suffer from motion sickness, should not visit this park. The roads are aboninable bad and shaking everybody in the fourwheel drive jeeps in every direction. A large towel can help you avoiding blue spots on your skin. The road from the entrance of the Park on nord site to the lodge is around 32 km, and will take a hour to arrive. During this hour already many animals pass by.
The park is fully independant from human interaction. With the new president the corruption is attacked, which means that no more poachers are allowed to hunt the animals against paying bribes to the police and park guards. Now all is regulated by nature. Tarangiri Park can be visited all year through, but in April its rain season, which might cause problems for doing the safari games. June till September this park is most visited by tourists.

If you love seeing elephants in the wild than this is the park for you. We were entertained for hours watching the elephants at the watering hole and watching them interact with each other. This was our first stop on our 11 day private safari with Duma Explorer and Ebenezer as our guide. For 2 days we drove around and our guide was great pointing out saw so many animals. I am glad this was our first stop. Of all the parks we visited this was my favourite.

We went to 4 parks/conservation areas on our 8 days of safari drives in Tanzania. They were all unique and spectacular but Tarangire was my favorite. The flora and fauna were exceptionally beautiful. There was ample opportunity to see lots of animals up close. The elephants were numerous and the family dynamics so interesting to watch. The roads were well maintained and we were able to access many areas. The washrooms were very clean, an odd thing to write about, but it surprised me. I appreciate how much effort is put into making this an exceptional park.

We have booked a 5 days safari with HantaExpedition in for 2 people (Serengeti, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater) and we really enjoyed our trip.
Our guide was really interesting and passionate about his job, we have spent a lot of time in each of the parks. No lack of organization (accommodations before, after and during safari, airport transfert...). Goodluck and his team are really nice and they were available to help us to visit Arusha and to discover the city by night.
If we go back to Tanzania, it will be with HantaExpedition.
