You go on a short river cruise on a paddlewheeler that takes you to a fake Indian Village where they move you around to show how to dry salmon and other native crafts. Pass it up and head to Denali or Seward.

Never have been on a river boat before and we enjoyed it. It was very informative and I loved the Indian village tour and seeing the sled dogs run!

Our group of four took this tour as part of our ARR "Alaska by Daylight" package and thoroughly enjoyed it. This family owned and operated excursion was one of the best-run tours we've ever been on, and it was educational, extremely interesting, and fun. Passengers are loaded at both the front and back of the boat, so if you want your choice of seats on the deck or inside next to the windows, arrive early enough to wait in line. The sound system is very good no matter what deck you are on, and when the boat slows down near the Butcher kennels and Athabascan Village, or when the pontoon boat lands or takes off, the person speaking on shore or in the plane is easily understood. The guides at the Chena River Village presented information about Athabascan culture and life in the early 1900s and gave demonstrations. There were free blueberry donuts available on the boat, as well as samples of salmon/cream cheese spread on crackers. You can buy cans of the salmon on the boat if you want. Yum!! After the tour there is an optional lunch, which we did not do. There is also an extensive souvenir shop available with very reasonable prices. Try the ice cream there, too - delicious.

The Riverboat Discovery Crew really puts on a show with this river cruise. We were on the really nice Discovery III. The weather was perfect. The narration and technology was first class. I felt like Disney was running the first class operation. The land tour part along with the shopping was very nice. They know how to handle big crowds. The sea plane and sled dogs were wonderful. Great fun and a must do in Fairbanks.

One of the best parts of our River Boat tour on the Chena River. We had the opportunity to learn about life in a recreated native Alaskan village from knowledgeable native guides. It was very informative and well run. They handled crowds very effectively and we were able to see most of the displays. I only wish we had more time for the tour to be able to see every part of the village. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend the tour!
