“Fun because of the movie, didn't really affect the battle”
Review of Little Round Top

Reviewed 28 June 2018

The problem with Little Round Top is that its importance is overstated. The story of the 20th Maine is interesting but historically speaking, even if the 20th Maine had been overrun, the Union Sixth Corps was right nearby and could have easily retaken the hill as there wasn't any additional Southern forces available to exploit and success.

A more pivotal action was the actions of the 19th Maine at Cemetery Ridge. If you want to read up on some lesser known but more important actions, this would be a good place to start.

We visited this place in the early evening. As we reach the top of the hill you can feel the power of this high ground. Where the Union finally pushed the Confederates back. Standing in the same spot where men took and lost thier lives is extremely powerful.

Little round top is located within the battlefield not far from big round top and over looks Devils den. The monuments and the view is stunning, and sobering as you overlook the battlefield and Devils den. New York infantry has a large monument that you can go up to the top and get a even greater view. Lots of rocks for the children to climb on, or just sit and take in the view. The path is wheelchair friendly and there is lots of parking. The path to the view is a incline, but easily manageable. Highly recommended to see.

Stopped here on our tour of the battlefields. We understood why it was such a great vantage point in the Civil War.

We were here for a family trip to learn about Gettysburg. We happened upon a ranger walk with Matt Atkinson. He was excellent and full of information. He interacted with the kids and kept them all interested. He is a real asset to Their ranger program!
You can also see him on PCN “Gettysburg Battle Walks”. It was great to meet him!
