What a great site to see on a walkaround in downtown Philly. Incredible exterior detail and it's on the subway route. Places like this are disappearing in urban America - this is a must-see.

When you you look up from the street level you can see the statue of William Penn high atop the city hall. Taking the ride up in the elevator to the observation deck gets you much closer and gives you an amazing 360 view of the city. As it is an open deck it is best enjoyed in good weather. We did not have time to do the interior tour of city hall but wished that we could have, as the art and architecture look amazing.

Located in the very center of “Center City” this magnificent building is one of the largest City Hall buildings in the US. The structure was designed by John McArthur, Jr who had the vision to hire Sculptor Alexander Milne Calder, grandfather of Alexander Calder, to create 250 statues to decorate its exterior. These statues emphasize the settlement of Philadelphia by Swedish immigrants as well as depictions of local Native American tribes. The building was once the tallest structure in the city until skyscrapers surpassed it in the 1970s. However, the 37’ bronze statue of William Penn (the largest bronze figure on top of any building in the world) still graces the beautiful tower.. A walk around City Hall reveals sculptures by Claes Oldenburg (clothespin) and Joe Brown’s young Ben Franklin at the printing press among many others.

We did a too-short self-guided tour. The artwork is extraordinary--a very pleasant way to experience Philadelphia history. Fascinating architecture, sculpture and grounds.
