Cowpens National Battlefield

Who has heard of this battle? And yet, it was the beginning of the end for Gen. Cornwallis. Without Cowpens, there would likely have been no Yorktown. If you are in the area, stop in, watch the video, and walk around. No entry fees. Great park rangers who will answer all your questions.

This battlefield site is maintained by the National Park Service, and is very interesting. The staff that works there can provide answers to any questions you may have about this military battle. It includes many interesting exhibits, and many original artifacts that was used during this time frame. Well worth a visit if you are in this area. You won't be disappointed.

We were "on our way" elsewhere in South Carolina, but I had always wanted to visit this site. When we arrived, we were the only folks at the National Battlefield. We got a "private tour" from one of the rangers, who took us along the path of the battle as seen from the British and Tory perspective. (This is the reverse of the numbered walking tour) That is the way to seek the battlefield. The terrain and flow of battle unfolds before you if you take the reverse route, and you can understand how the British and Tory forces found themselves in a killing zone. The hillocks and depressions concealed the Colonial forces. That would not be as apparent if you take the tour in the order set out in the visitor's guide.

The historical markers and unit placement information on the field is also very helpful to understanding what happened here.

The visitor's center is also very good. The group members who are not complete history fanatics enjoyed the visit too, and came away with greater appreciation for the importance of the southern theater in the War of Independence.

Wear comfortable walking attire. The battlefield will not require rigorous activity, but there is a modest bit of walking.

Took our friends to Cowpens Battlefield last week and they enjoyed it .Most people do not realize that the Revolutionary War ( i was one) came down to the South .You have to see the free movie and walk the battlefield and imagine the fight. It,s free and interesting.

Very nice visitor center with a video telling the story behind the Cowpens National Battlefield as a key battle during the Revolutionary War. Nice paved and gravel 1 mile battlefield walking trail. Interesting part in the history of our great country.
