The park itself is OK, nothing special, and I wouldn't go out of the way to visit it.
There are restaurants near by that may bring you into the area.

Union Square, on 14th Street, has a long history of gatherings, large and small, as well as being a transportation hub of lower Manhattan. Statues of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are in the park. (Statues of lessor political figures were relegated to Madison Square Park on 23rd street.)

The square hosts all sorts of things including one of the best outdoor markets in the city.

Contrary to popular opinion Union Square was named because of the confluence of numerous streets and subways. The union of all these streets (I counted 11 streets and 7 subway lines and numerous bus lines too) come together at Union Square.

A nice place for a quit stop, if you are nearby, and is in need of a break.
But in my opinion, not worth to have as a goal.

Happily stumbled upon this place with my wife whilst out and about. Really nice little square surrounded by lots of vibrant ambience and people, great shops and places to eat.

Passed by on a weeknight, and there were Hare Krishnas, street musicians, lots of strange clothes, and strange hair colors. The streets full of young people.
Clearly for all of them, it was their place to be seen. It was crazy noisy and
wild.

Lots of shopping and restaurants in 3 directions from Union Square
(not as much on the way uptown, but along 14th Street and going down
to NYU...Many restaurants have reasonable prices and cater to young people and students. Also Panera, ABP, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe are all a block away.
