Food and Wine Magazine listed Jess Shadbolt and Clare de Boer as two of the best new chefs of 2018. Since two adult women who love food were on our way to NYC for the day we decided to try their restaurant, King. We loved our lunch. The restaurant looks like an Italian trattoria on the outside. Inside it is fresh and airy, despite the smaller size. There seemed to be a kiss of lemon and lime everywhere. Our server was polite and knowledgable. We chose 2 Italian red wines that were lovely. The two of us shared Harry's Bar sandwich as an appetizer. It was a little overdone but delicious. We also split the tonno e fagiolo which was fresh and yummy. For our entree we had the quail and polenta dish which was out of this world.

Food: if the daily-changing menu has only 4 starters, 3 mains, and a few desserts, they should all be first rate. And they were. Creative combinations, well executed.
.
Service: The menu is virtually all in Italian, which prompts many questions from guest to server. This is a conceit not to be imitated; almost like having a guest who does not know what an XXXXX is, feel like a rube too embarrassed to ask. Not that it would do much good, since the noise level was so high that our female server with a soft voice could not be heard by the four of us. And, if you can print a daily menu for food, why make the server recite the unusual (but very good) desserts? Minor flaws would have included not bringing sugar with the coffee, having nothing like Equal in the house, not dividing our mains as requested, not serving anything like bread, and so forth.

Prices were at the new high level for small, trendy places; i.e. the mains all started with numbers in the mid-thirties, with appetizers closing in on $20. $9 for a pilsner beer! 75-80 minutes after we were seated (on time) we were served our dessert, our coffee, and our (unbidden) check. We could see that several people were waiting by the bar, but we thought that management should have allowed a full two hours before booking our table to others.

Will we return? No. Will the reader of this? ????

I'm surprised there are only four reviews of this restaurant, and none since last summer. We were drawn here by a review in the New Yorker, and it didn't disappoint. The restaurant is small, crowded, and noisy, but the food is excellent. The finochietta appetizer was heavy on the fennel and very good; the socca was sliced thin and excellent. Sirloin was cooked perfectly, and nicely served with a delicious horseradish cream. Wines by the glass were expensive. It would be a five-star review but for the noise level, with brick walls, a solid ceiling, very loud music and crowded tables, it was hard to have a conversation.

We enjoyed sharing two main courses - a pork chop with tapenade and a hanger steak - with good service, albeit a bit expensive for the wines by the glass.

We were very pleased that headed downtown. This place is alive and we could see why. Food was tasty, service excellent, and wine hit the spot. Menu is limited, but there were sufficient choices. Really made to feel welcome.
