Between 15 and 20 years ago I had eaten at the Emerald Chinese restaurant many times and found the food excellent The restaurant was always very busy.Iit was at the upper end of the price range for Chinese food but I considered it well worth the price.
Tonight, finding ourselves in the area, we decided to go to Emerald. The first clue that something had changed was a large sign on the door announcing a change in ownership, the second was that the restaurant, on a Saturday night, was practically empty. We were seated by a very nice and attentive gentleman and ordered. Rather than staggering the delivery of the food, everything-soup, and two main courses all arrived at once and with less than 10 minutes of placing our order. The portions were more than ample especially the hot and sour soup which I suspect I will be eating for at least 3-4 more meals. The orange chicken advertised as "spicy" was not and the chicken was actually rubbery. The seafood and pan fried noodles were stocked primarily with several pieces of some type of white fish , 2 scallops and 2 small shrimp. The prices had not really changed much and are still high. The waiter was delightful and helpful apologizing for the rapidity of the delivery of the food and helping to box the leftovers.
Over all I think the restaurant has really gone downhill and I can not in good conscience recommend it anymore.

I’m going to start this off by saying that usually I am very lenient about issues, but this was really something to remember.

I truly wish that there was a 0 star option. Our group consisted of 16 people, and we had made a reservation beforehand. When we arrived, they said that they had not heard of any reservations under any of our names. We ended up waiting for about 50 minutes before being seated, even though the restaurant was half empty. When we were seated, one of he waiters informed us that it would be about an hour and a half before we got our food. We thought that would be fine, considering that we would be spending lots of time with each other. Three hours had passed, and it was about 9:30 at night, when we finally got all of our food, plus many other dishes that even the waiters didn’t know of! Most would be greateful of this, but it ended up tasting horrible. Even the staff were joking about the fact that we had been there for so long! One of the dishes that one of our group members had ordered was a vegetarian eggplant dish. She asked one of the waiters what it consisted of after she ate some of it, and it ended out there was pork in the dish! When we were finally set to go, they charged us a bucket load of a service fee, when we thought we should be paying less then normal, because of the quality of the service. We tried negotiating with the manager, who kept leading us to the same conclusion over and over, which was to call the owner, and that he had no control. All in all, do NOT go to this restaurant.

The food is not bad, but not too great as well. But if you are craving for a good dim sum, this place is not bad at all.

This restaurant is very traditional to Hong Kong style of meals. There are many choices on the large menu and every dish is fresh and very flavorful. I have been dinning here for many years and watched the staff service many dinners with amazing efficiency.

Emerald is one of the oldest Chinese (Hong Kong) style restaurant in San Diego. Actually it helped to make Convoy Street the Asian street as it is now. It's also one of the best Chinese restaurants in town, together with its sister restaurant Pearl in Rancho Bernardo.

The restaurant was remodeled under the supervision of its 2nd generation management, and added a bar area to attract younger patrons. The environment feels very clean and neat and chic.

The food is pretty good, and the service is very good.

Come for dim sum or regular Hong Kong style entries. You won't be disappointed.
