“A floating San Diego gem!”

San Diego County is an amazing place to spend time if you love the great outdoors. I’ve had the privilege of living here for years! So what better way to surprise a loved one with a special birthday “stay-cation” —sun, sea, beach, soothing salt air. We both had 48 hours to slip away from work in the middle of the week. That left us little time to drive somewhere unique, and clearly not enough time to fly. “A boat,” was the first notion that lingered.

This turned out to be a splendid idea.

With just a little exploring I found the Slipaway, a lovingly restored 45’ classic ketch. Docked at Shelter Cove Marina on Shelter Island (not really an island but a spit of land jutting out into San Diego Bay, known as “America’s Cup Harbor) surrounded by great water views across to a bustling downtown, the hills of Point Loma, yet away from the fray of much busier Marina’s--she was the perfect classic yacht on which to spend several days and nights on the water. Lucky for us, the “Slipaway” is a bed and breakfast (the continental variety, where fresh fruit, yogurt, teas, coffee, juice and oatmeal await you) What a great idea!

We could have arranged for a cruise or sail around the harbor but we chose to just stay put and savor our surroundings.

The teak wood is warm and inviting, and for a 45-footer, the layout is designed to take advantage. There are two heads aboard, a nice big combined saloon and galley area, plenty of storage (but we weren’t heading to Tahiti, so we kept what we brought aboard to a minimum). There are several sleeping areas, so it would accommodate more people, however it was just perfect for the two of us! The aft stateroom holds a very comfortable bed-for-two, and has lots of natural light and ventilation.

If you can’t stand being disconnected to the world (by choice) there are two TV’s with cable, good internet, and excellent cell reception. But if you want you can easily slip away from your digital world.

At night, we were gently rocked to sleep only to awaken once when a sea lion flopped down on a nearby walkway and emitted a guttural low bark—a momentary startle! Listen carefully and you can hear little snapping shrimp foraging on the hull of the boat. It reminds me of the sound Rice Krispies make when you pour milk on them. On a boat, it is not unexpected to have some colorful dock mates.

Daytime we tended to linger on deck, catching up with reading material, taking a walk along the harbor, and checking out one of the several seafood restaurants less than a mile away. (easy walk, easier drive). There is a public fishing dock an easy walk away, if you are inclined to catch your dinner...The Slipaway has a grill on deck.

There are added amenities of a nearby work-out room, and clean shower facilities with lockers.

After several days aboard, we returned to our land home, refreshed and happy, and perhaps a bit melancholy for the sea and sailing ships and worldly adventures.
The Slipaway evoked all of the above, and left us with the thought:

“We need to do this again!”

This was our third stay here; twice on the Slipaway. She is definitely my favorite little yacht due to her charm and personality. This older wooden ship seems to have so many stories to tell. This is a very relaxing Marina; not nearly as busy and noisy as other marinas we have visited. Shaun and her colleagues are so friendly and accommodating. They make sure that your stay is enjoyable and comfortable as possible. The ship itself it comfy and perfect for two people. The galley has plenty of space to store your snacks and beverages. The marina staff make sure you have plenty of ice, fresh fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, coffee and orange juice. Everyone there is s friendly. It truly is a relaxing place to visit with nearby amenities within walking, biking or driving distance. The bathrooms are kept clean and the showers are nice. They have an on site gym, laundry facility (bring soap and quarters) and soda machine. You can rent kayaks or just lay on your boat and be rocked to sleep. Can't wait to go back!!

7 days of bliss! My boyfriend booked the "Slipaway" as a surprise getaway for us for my birthday. His original booking was for 4 nights only, since he wanted to confirm I like it. As soon as I stepped inside the boat, I liked it so much, we extended our stay to a full week. There are other boats that are rented out as B&Bs by the same company but this one suited our style most. From an aesthetic viewpoint, it is a classic style boat with a pirate-ship like stern, with large windows at the stern for the main berth. It has two main masts, 46 feet length, a teakwood hull fully encapsulated in fiberglass, all cabinetry, wood-work & flooring were teak. This makes the boat heavy leading to a smooth sail, as we experienced on the day we took it out for a sail around San Diego harbor. We were provided with supplies for breakfast in the galley & we did some of our own shopping in the market. We also used the barbecue provided on the boat. There are ample restaurants around but we were so addicted with life on the boat, with its gently rhythm, that we resisted going out as much as possible. It was hard to get out of bed in the morning with the boat trying its best to lull us into sleep with its gentle rocking. In the afternoon, we laid out on the deck, reading & relaxing. Even though the evenings were somewhat chilly, we couldn't resist being out on the deck to gaze at the stars. Gorgeous sunrise & sunsets came free with the stay!
We only wish that there was a shower on-board the boat, instead of having to use the one at the club-house (only a few steps away for sure, but not the same as having a shower in the B&B).
