I normally never write reviews but always read those of others when looking for a place to stay while away from home; I decided to leave a review after our experience.
The actually unit is exactly as pictured, clean, attactive, and well equipped. Nice little set up for being away and still having the convinces of home. Cable TV and WiFi. Everything you need is there in the unit, they thought of it all. The only physical take away from the actual unit is the building it’s housed in. When we first arrived I thought oh no this place is a dump and what have I gotten us into?
The lobby and stairwell are a little sketchy to say the least, but not a representation of the unit you will be staying in at least! The elevator in the building in non operational so be ready to huff it up to your floor with your luggage in to and ignore the weird smells in the halls, it’s a little stale and if someone is cooking you can smell it in the hallways. We stayed on the 3rd floor so at least we got some excericise a few times per day and worries subsided once we opened the door to the unit...night and day,
Location: The building is in the middle of the Gaslamp District, walking distance to many of the other popular areas. Uber ride from the airport is about $11 and 10 minutes if no traffic. There are several eateries within one minute and a full grocery within a 5-10 minute walk.
Noise: While the location is great for being in the Gaslamp and central to Petco and the Marina area the noise is the BIGGEST take away. I had read on another site that this place was near bars and a little noisy. A little noisy is an understatement to say the least. Unless you want to listen to music blaring all night because it’s party central directly across the street, with patrons singing and shouting until all hours of the night this is not the place for you.
It is presently 2:18 am on a Monday night and the crowd across the street sounds like they are singing Karaoke in the livingroom. This was the same last night and I am sure will be like this tomorrow night. The hotel is at 5th and F street and directly in the middle of the bar/club scene so if noise is not an issue for you then this will be the perfect place.
There are at least four bars directly across the street and I can look out the window and watch all the madness. Ear plugs and a noise machine can offer no assistance. It is LOUD and once the bars closes and the crowd disapates it changes over to the sound of service trucks cleaning the streets, car honking, and people in wheelchairs blaring music rolling down the street. Basically, it’s a noisy most of the 24H period, the worst from 8pm until 3am.
Unit equipment: The only issue with the actual unit was the HVAC, the air was set to cool and it was fine until the cycle ended and it would come back on blowing hot air instead of cool. Hopefully they will get that addressed soon because it was inconvenient to have to call into the concierge multiple times and keep readjusting the air over and over, we eventually just turned it off completely. But to their credit they did offer to move us however they needed to first find another location and iwe didn’t want to repack and hassle with it..but if the weather iwas really hot we would have because it would be unbearable.
Overall: we would book another Sonder but not this location (Gaslamp) because the units are really nice...just hope the other buildings exteriors and common areas are not old and dated as this one was because it’s turn off for discriminating travelers.
