Owner description: The de Young, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and located in Golden Gate Park, is the nation’s fifth most visited art museum. It showcases American art from the seventeenth through the twenty-first centuries, international textile arts and costumes, and art from the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa.

The DeYoung has evolved over the years and everyone loves the 9th floor observation tower. The art collection has something for everybody and there is typically a special exhibit that changes quarterly. Buy a ticket and visit the Legion of Honor on the same day; just Uber pool over.

Fabulous new museum inside Golden Gate Park is worth a detour. Start upstairs with a fantastic collection of American 19thc art, especially Hudson River School painters, but also some decorative arts. Downstairs is excellent collection of California crafts. I saw a first-rate Cult of the Machine exhibition too. The cafeteria was also excellent, which was a pleasant surprise. Cab ride back to the city was expensive but worth it.

An SF local of 17 years, this is my favorite museum for its location in the park, beauty inside and out. THis museum has excellent exhibits that cover world famous artists to fashion designers to local history and culture. Be sure to make your way to the viewing deck for a beautiful view of the park and city! WHile youre in the area be sure to check out the park area out front (summertime has free live concerts, art on display and please support local musician in the area as well- my favorite,Bryce Mulholland, if youre lucky, youll see him playing the steel drums live- an exquisite melody adn vibration to the body and ears, take home his CD for a wonderful SF memory and to relax you into meditation). Youll fall in love, and likely be back:)
