If you can not get out to one of the other "islands" then at least try to experience the "North Shore" of Oahu. Turtle Bay Estates condo was a great place to stay especially if looking for affordablity. Clean, spacious bottom floor condo with screened lanai looking out onto the golfcourse. (Water did splash onto and into Lanai during torrential rainfall as the gutter over the lanai seemed to be clogged). About a 10-15 minute walk to beach.....about a 3-5 minute drive. Very quiet neighbors, overall quiet surroundings and excellent maintence staff (immediately replaced a broken screen door that was found upon our arrival and replaced a can opener that did not work). Loved being on the north shore for 4 days and experiencing the local Hawaiian life. Great north shore beaches and FANTASTIC surf. If you only visit Honolulu and Waikiki then you have NOT seen "HAWAII". . We experienced all areas of Oahu as we also stayed in Honolulu with family for 10 days.
Things to do all around Oahu:
Hike up to Diamond Head
Hike out to Ka'ena Point
Hike to Makapua Lighthouse
Pearl Harbor Memorial
Matsumoto's Shave Ice
Giovanni's Shrimp truck
sip ice cold coconut milk right out of the coconut!!
fresh fruit stands--fried bananas!
Leonard's bakery for Malasadas
Wailua Bakery for lunch
Walk around Haleiwa town
See giant sea turtles on Laniakea beach
PS..Don't let any amount of rain stop you from doing anything...we had LOTS of rain during this visit, (sometimes torrential)....but it is a WARM rain and you are in HAWAII...enjoy!!!!
