Everything went smoothly, by the time we got an overview of our "home" for the next couple of days, we were off to cruise North Shore.Rented several surfboards. Was thankful the waves were not too big :) Surfed several spots and found a great campsite to enjoy our "home". Everything was provided. Bedding, towels, beach chairs and kitchen stuff. It was great waking up, making our own coffee and watching the sunrise. Great food trucks along the coast. We shopped at Foodland/Sunset area and stocked up on fresh poke, fruit, and beverages, Wished we had booked a few more days. We will do it again!!
we absolutely loved driving Mallory, the 1984 VW camper van, all around the island. she actually drives really, really smooth, although she can be challenging to cold-start and reverse- to us, that was more charming than a real problem. we got so many hangtens and lots of people stopped us to tell us how great our ride was, or to ask us about getting one themselves. we felt very hip, and even better, many people assumed we were local and we weren't lumped into the vibes of the tourist parade.
the pop up was a great sleeping space, and allowed the cool beach breeze to lull us to sleep. there are curtains for every window, so you actually get a lot of privacy (at the expense of airflow if the windows are secure, but the popup helps with that, and is the choicer place to sleep). we didn't cook because there are too many amazing places to have food prepared for you, but everything was in order to do so had we wanted to. we did wash up a little with the nonpotable water tank/sink. very efficient and livable! the beach chairs were the best part- from sitting on the beach looking up to the Milky Way and out to the night surfers, to the sunrises and sunsets- those made those perfect moments so much more comfortable for our aging backs ;)
Lucas was so friendly and helped us generate a list of safe places to sleep and cool places to go. he kitted us out with a mask and snorkel (a little leaky, but pretty good), which we used at various stops along our way. for a nominal fee, he picked us up and dropped us off at the airport, which made things super easy.
I wholeheartedly recommend renting one of Lucas' vans and rambling around Oahu- such a great way to get that old-time Hawaii feel. It is also helpful to get the camping experience without having to haul any gear! 5 big stars, thanks, Lucas!
