Room and service was great. Dinner excellent. Swimming was safe, even big waves not dangerous. It was great fun watching the surfers. Perfect location for daytrips to Polihale beach ( a must see), Waimea canyon drive, which offers hikes with stunning views - we loved the hikes near the Koke museum.

The location is great, and our room was quiet and looked out (as requested) at the Ocean but not the pool view. All good! We had a private patio with a table and chairs, might we enjoyed daily.

The patchy service refers to the breakfast offered in the package we had. Each day was a different adventure. Sometimes the breakfast worked, and other days it was either too slow or just patchy. Also, the atmosphere of the restaurant itself is rather bland - but the outside view is great.

We give high praise to the valet, especially Michael, who helped provide suggestions for drives, restaurants, and experiences.

Lovely, friendly, personable small hotel with no crowds. Lots of space at the pool and front lawn. Easy access to the beach. Very comfortable beds. Note that the waves are strongest in the summer, lowest in the winter, so plan accordingly if important to you. Rooms facing the pool have a bit more noise and less privacy compared to room facing away from the pool. Red Salt breakfast included in the resort package was great in every way. This is our second time there in 3 months.

Room tip: Rooms facing the pool have a bit more noise and less privacy compared to room facing away from the pool.

This was our third visit to Koa Kea. Unfortunately, the place has dramatically changed over the last 5 years. Here are a few examples that should caution anyone that is thinking of paying the high cost to stay here:

1. When we checked in, the hostess asked us if we were aware that the restaurant was closed on Sunday and Monday nights...nope, we had no idea. To which she responded, "I see, well I hope you have reservations for those nights already because restaurants are mostly booked by now." I understand we are coming out of covid and can't expect things to be fully up and running, but how about you let us know ahead of time so we can plan for this. And, she was right, reservations were nearly impossible for anywhere nearby.

2. Our room was a disaster. After entering the room, my wife noticed that under the AC unit, the carpet was completely stained (see picture) with what we assumed was black mold. We contacted the front desk and requested another room to which they said "we are going to send the head of housekeeping over to explain." Very strange, but we played along. She arrived and said the following, "Ohhh that isn't mold, that is from the chemicals the exterminators used." So, your answer is don't worry about mold, you are just breathing in chemicals. We asked to speak to the manager who informed us that there weren't any other rooms that night, but we could move to a new room the following day. Great...time to get high off some industrial-strength Raid. We covered the stains with towels to pretend like they didn't exist and woke up at the break of dawn to evacuate.

3. Umbrella Wars: you would assume that if you are spending the cash to stay at a place like Koa Kea that it isn't too much to ask to find a shady spot to relax and enjoy the views. Couldn't be farther from the truth. Be prepared to wake up by 7AM to claim your umbrella at the pool. If you aren't out there early, especially on yoga mornings, forget about finding any shade on the property. We even saw people stake their claim with books and hats and return to their rooms to sleep.

4. Room service: twice we tried to order breakfast to our room. Each day, we called room service 3-4 times and each time we received a recording saying "we are busy, please leave a message and we will get right back to you" after which your call is transferred to their voicemail box which was always full and resulted in a "Goodbye" and hangup. Truly great service.

5. Soap: First time taking a shower in our new room and went to use the pump shampoo and body wash to find they were completely empty. Annoying but no big deal. Went to the front desk, informed them of the situation and asked them if they could fill the soaps. "Absolutely, will contact housekeeping right now and send someone over". Come back from the beach, want to rinse off and go for the soap...still empty 6 hours later. Not a huge deal, but a microcosm of the entire experience.

6. Upcoming renovations: The staff continually mentioned why things looked the way they did (rundown) or why things were stained/dirty with "well, the big renovation is happening soon and we decided not to do anything until that happens". Great! That is super for me right now. Thanks for letting me know.

My wife and I have some really fond memories of this place and it is our favorite hotel in all of Hawaii. We were so disappointed this time, though. Maybe after the "huge renovation" this place will return to its former glory, but I promise you it isn't worth the price right now.

The hotel premises, staff and restaurant were all just perfect!
My husband and I stayed with our two teenagers. We were all pleased with everything, especially the menu options and quality of every meal.
