“Shack By The Sea”

Our honeymoon at Hale Nanea was perfect! We wanted to be alone together without a care in the world and it delivered.

The property was clean and everything was in working order. Our only complaints are that the property was a little rough around the edges for the price. Nothing too serious -- a missing light fixture outside, a screen door in the bathroom that didn't close all of the way (mosquitoes!), mildew on the hot tub cover, and the dishwasher which sat cockeyed in its enclosure requiring a bit of finesse in order to open it -- but for the price we couldn't help but notice these relatively minor things.

Beyond that, our check-in was smooth, and the property manager was helpful -- and patient when I had a little trouble figuring out the gate key code when we arrived.

If you're looking for quiet isolation and near-luxury-comfort, this is the place. The walk to the beach every day was a nice stroll through through a semi-wild garden filled with Hawaiian beauty. Secret Beach itself is, in my opinion, the best beach on Kauai: Never crowded, with plenty of beauty, variety, and space to call your own.

The ultimate downside was that we found ourselves so happily in love with the place that we only ventured out to explore Kauai once during our stay. Why look for paradise when it waited right outside your door?

Favorite memories include:

1) Having pizza (from Pau Hana Bakery) and wine outside while watching a movie on our laptop while an amazing sunset was the backdrop

2) Icy cold outdoor showers after hiking up from the beach

3) Watching the Milky Way duck in and out of soft rain showers while we sat in the hot tub at night and enjoyed our self-invented "Hawaiian Honeymooner" cocktail [one part Coconut Rum Liqueur, four parts Pass-O-Guava nectar, shaken over ice -- thank me later]

4) Being awoken every morning by "our" rooster (we eventually named him Cochrane Longfeather-Combs) and Nene Geese and -- from our bed -- seeing a rainbow over the ocean

“Secluded and peaceful getaway”
Reviewed 27 June 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We spent a week at the little cottage and found it to be set in a peaceful and quiet area. The view is beautiful and we enjoyed watching the Nenes (Hawaiian geese) in the yard. The cottage itself is very nice, but could have been a bit cleaner for the price we paid. The trek down to Secrets Beach was tough, but well worth the effort. The beach is beautiful and not populated. The lighthouse is off to the right and makes for a picturesque view. We would definitely recommend staying in the North Shores area of Kauai. It's a beautiful island and this end is the best.
