“Charm, comfort, natural beauty in tropical paradise”

Members of our hula halau (school) stayed here while attending the festivities at the Marrie Monarch hula festival in Hilo. This part of the coast of the Big Island is spectacularly beautiful, and the location of the Old Jodo Temple was close to Hilo but removed enough to feel more peaceful and with less spring rain. The Old Jodo Temple has a rich history, and although it is old it is scrupulously maintained with all the modern comforts including large, well-equipped kitchen, internet access for those who want it, and access to a landline telephone if needed. The bedrooms are charming and beds are comfortable. The building is surrounded by a large and tended garden. We enjoyed some wonderful communal meals, some members of our group made daily trips to the park at the shore to walk and do yoga, and our only regret was that due to our schedule we couldn't spend as much time hanging out there as we wanted to. It exceeded our expectations, as did the warm hospitality of our hosts. We didn't see much of them, but they were available and responsive to any request, left us bunches of bananas and came to watch us practice hula in the temple space upstairs. Utterly charming place, lovingly tended, great for a family or a group like ours. We managed to accommodate every one comfortably thanks to our hosts!

The Old Jodo Temple on the winding road to Laupahoehoe Point, restored to modern comfort but retaining its historic character, is spacious, comfortable, and eclectically but beautifully furnished. The hosts are attentive and hospitable, but respectful of your privacy. The park-like grounds are planted with mature trees, tropical fruits, vines, and flowers, and peace and aloha pervade the property. The kitchen is a cook's dream, the beds are comfortable, and the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks will lull you to sleep. Just a short walk away, Laupahoehoe Point, once the site of a tsunami disaster, is now a peaceful memorial park with a huge spreading banyan tree, picnic areas, crashing waves, and rocky tidepools. The Old Jodo Temple is a great home base for quiet R&R (badminton anyone?) and for exploring all the Big Island has to offer, whether for a couple or a family. Step back in time without sacrificing modern amenities. Yes, there is wi-fi, no there's no tv-- but with the ocean in your back yard, who needs it? A stellar place to spend a few days or (my preference for next trip) a few weeks.
