Owner description: Taliesin, the home, studio and country estate of Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in the hilly Driftless Region of southwestern Wisconsin near Spring Green. It is the name of Wright’s house as well as the 800-acre estate that includes buildings from all decades of Wright’s career. Taliesin has a commanding presence in Jones Valley, the watershed where Wright’s Lloyd Jones ancestors settled after immigrating from Wales in the 1860s. Taliesin was named in honor of his Welsh heritage, was the name of a druid bard, and literally means “shining brow.” Its many wings and terraces reach out around the ridge of the hill, embracing the site and standing as “brow.” Taliesin was the principal residence of Wright as a mature designer, and the valley was his inspiration and life-long laboratory for architectural designs and innovation. Taliesin in its three iterations (1911, 1914, 1925) represents the most complete embodiment of Wright’s philosophy of Organic Architecture. The Taliesin residence is the heart of a series of buildings that Wright designed for himself and his family members on the estate. Other buildings include: Romeo & Juliet Windmill (1896), Hillside Home School (1903), Tan-y-Deri (1908), Hillside Drafting Studio (1932), Midway Barn (1949), Hillside Theater (1952), and the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center (1967).

As an architect of 30+ years, and a longstanding admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright, I have visited the Taliesin East location a number of times. I have also visited many other FLW sites including the Fallingwater location several times in the past. I am always so impressed with the quality of the tours that are given through these architectural landmarks. Whether the tour guide is a young student or an older aficionado, their knowledge and genuine excitement about what they are doing is inspiring. The work of FLW is amazing and pretty much speaks for itself, but having a good tour guide really enhances the whole experience. Walking through his home and studio or Fallingwater or any other project he designed, is an experience that I find profoundly affects lay people who don't really understand what they are experiencing as much as it affects designers and students of Frank Lloyd Wrights work and philosophy. In addition to the overall experience of being there in the space, the added stories and background given by the tour guides and all the people associated with the venue including the gift shop and restaurant and the FLW Foundation, really adds to the whole experience. It is what causes me to return numerous times, to not only see the progress on renovation projects, but to hear new stories from the highly trained and well equipped tour guides in all the FLW facilities. It is very reassuring to me as a student and, dare I say, follower of Frank Lloyd Wright that his work and his legacy is in the hands of such dedicated and loyal people. I highly recommend any of the tours of Taliesin in Spring Green Wisconsin, and any other of the works by the world's greatest architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

My friends and I did the 2 hour tour of the Hilside School and Taliesin and enjoyed it immensely! Our guide Cyndi was top-notch and the transportation was comfortable and on time. The buildings are breath-taking

The 2-hr tour was excellent. See the house, theater, architecture school, etc. (even charred beams still remaining in the redone house).

Our visit was really wonderful. Have visited Taliesin West 3 times, but the original is so overwhelming better. Seeing FLW's work in his own lair, where he could and did change things often over time, shows a genius at work. Our guide was great, very knowledgeable in FLW. Highly recommended.

Have wanted to do this tour for a long time. Was waiting for our daughter to be the right age. Our tour guide was EXCELLENT - what a wealth of knowledge. The setting was beautiful. Our daughter, who is 11, enjoyed the tour but, was a little long for her. Would recommend they offer a 1 hour highlight tour or 1 hour house tour. Our daughter enjoyed the house tour the most. Every Wisconsinite should do this tour.
