“Loved the Train BnB”

Great Northern Train Ride

We thoroughly enjoyed our BnB experience on the Great Northern Train Ride. A wonderful 4 course meal, a ride through the Wisconsin countryside - with part of the ride along the Namekagon River - saw the sunset on the return trip, getting to watch the Engineer 'drive the train', and sleeping in our booth that included a private bathroom. And then breakfast in the morning - with the best hashbrowns I've ever had.

We took the traditional bed and breakfast train. We were expecting to have dinner and a short train ride followed by a night on the train. Everything exceeded our expectations. The staff were incredible (without exception). The five course dinner was served leisurely over about 2 hours. The servings were huge. I had salmon and my husband had ribs. The cheesecake serving was enough for 2-3 people. How can you not have a good time looking at that beautiful scenery (except for a car hoarder's place that was slightly in view behind the trees and the two toilets that had been placed as a joke near the tracks). When the train returned to the station and all the dinner guests disembarked, the conductor started a fire in the fire pit so we could sit outside. We were the only guests on the traditional plan but there was a separate car with about 8 people who the conductor convinced to have us join them. That was fun and a very friendly gesture. We slept well in our bunk beds. The headroom was greater than in recent trains we have slept on. A small toilet and fold down sink was in a small space within our compartment. The next morning, we had a huge breakfast before disembarking. We have been telling many people about this great experience. Would be great for celebrating special occasions. The people that were in the special car got to be with the engineer for part of the ride. They were so happy about that.

The pizza train was a big disappointment. We started in the gift shop. The woman working was on the phone laughing and carrying on a conversation while people waited to pick up their tickets and pay for items. When she finally waited on us, she said she had to get back to the phone. We were told to sit down and wait to be called. Then a guy came and said we could board the train. Our grandson was celebrating his third birthday, so we were hoping for a fun experience for him. There was no "All Aboard" like we expected since this was supposedly a child friendly activity. The pizza was set on the tables in boxes. The train ride was super slow. There wasn't any dialogue about what we were seeing. The conductor was blah! The pizza was very good. The guy handing out the pizza was nice enough but didn't go out of his way to make it a fun train ride. I would not recommend this to anyone.

We had a wonderful time.
Staff was very efficient and friendly.
Food was delicious and plentiful. Cash bar was very reasonable.
Scenery great.
We even got to ride with the engineer for awhile.
What more could you ask for?

Overall I was disappointed by the Pizza Train. Check-in at the gift shop was uninviting; staff wasn’t friendly. We were brusquely given our envelope with tickets and told to sit and wait. There was no “all aboard” or bell to welcome us on the train car (single car). The pizza was delivery that you eat right away, but tasted good. The train was so slow; in fact our ride lasted almost two hours (not a bonus when traveling with small children).

I don’t recommend this to anyone; there was no magic, and the workers all seemed uninspired. It’s like they know this is one of the only area attractions, and kids like trains, so they don’t need to put in any effort.
