Owner description: Ten Chimneys is the estate lovingly created by Broadway legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. With no ropes and nothing under glass, guests are treated to a VIP guided tour of a National Historic Landmark replete with original furnishings and overflowing with the romance of the 1930s and ’40s. “Every time I was visiting with the Lunts in Genesee Depot, I was in a sort of daze of wonder; the dining room, the table, the china, the silver, the food, the extraordinary care and beauty and taste…a sort of dream, a vision.”-Katharine Hepburn

We live in the area and always drive by the brown sign that says 10 Chimneys....it’s been on our bucket list. It’s did not disappoint. Our tour group was a little bigger than the normal, 12. We had tour guides that were knowledgeable and funny. Answered all questions and let us linger for a moment if we wanted to take a few extra moments to enjoy a room. It’s amazing to stand on the Lunt’s property and think nothing has really changed —its all their belongings. My husband and I were celebrating a special occasion and the guides took extra time to take some photos outside for us- very accommodating.

We stopped here during a recent “best of Wisconsin architecture “ visit and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We opted for the 2 hour home/gardens/studio tour. Our tour group was small (6 of us total) and our docent extremely knowledgeable.
If you love theater/historical daily life/retro, this is a tour for you.
The home has been lovingly maintained and offers a rich glimpse into mid century celebrity life. The stories brought the place alive.
Plan at least 3+ hours to do the place justice.

I was in the area with a friend who was attending a conference. I was out driving around and came across this historical site. What a lovely find. The tour begins at the Conference Center across the road. It offered a short film and a lot of displays about the two Broadway stars who made their home here. It also had a really nice gift shop. The shuttle carried us across the street to the house and what a house it is. The house is just as it was when Ms Fontanne died at age 94. All their possessions and art work are in the house. The house and surrounding guest houses really have to be seen because it would be hard to describe very elegant and how interesting it is. Loved it !!

If you enjoy history and theatre, there couldn't be a more intriguing place to visit. Everything here is absolutely pristine. A step back in time.

I had wanted to go to Ten Chimneys for years, and with a friend who is an artist, we looked at each other on a Sunday and said, Let's go on Tuesday! And we did. It was a hot July day, but we didn't care. We had no trouble finding the estate and when we did, we were invited into the air-conditioned waiting area and gift shop. The tour was led by a trained docent, through the main house, additional outbuildings, and grounds, explaining everything she knew about the buildings and their previous celebrated owners. The houses are dated and somewhat musty smelling, but the keepers do their best to preserve everything about this estate. It is truly a treat to have viewed the Lunt-Fontanne way of living, and that they insisted on summering in Wisconsin, away from New York City. On a décor note, the interiors were a little too Swedish for me, but it was what kept them comforted and feeling at home. I would highly recommend experiencing Ten Chimneys for yourself. There is quite a bit of walking up and down and on uneven surfaces, but I understand they accommodate individuals with physical challenges; its best to inquire before going. Don't miss it if you can help it!
