This stay was a belated Christmas present for my children and their partners, so needed to fulfil high expectations on my behalf; it definitely did not disappoint.
We arrived in the dark on a rainy day and walked into a little bit of sunshine, welcomed by a lovely vase of fresh flowers, accompanied by a sweet card and a much appreciated bottle of red!
It took moments for the place to warm up, as the heating was already on low. We found tea, coffee, sugar and milk supplied in the kitchen and more than adequate utensils for our needs. A plethora of beautiful pottery bowls to hold our lemons, eggs, olives etc.. I had bowl envy!
The fire was well stocked with an assortment of fire lighters, kindling and logs, which satisfied the pyromania within all of our party!
The bedrooms were really pretty; all tastefully accessorised with beautiful throws and cushions over the pristine white linen and thick white fluffy towels a plenty. The beds themselves were extremely comfortable and soft enough for a princess not to be troubled by a pesky pea.
We awoke to glorious sunshine on our first morning, which accentuated the beauty of our surrounding countryside. We found an ideal gentle walk, via Google......Walks in Great Tew, which took around 1.5 hours and proved extremely intetesting, taking in rural delights and beautiful stone dwellings.
The Falkland Arms welcomed us into its heart. 16th Century and as warm as the inglenook fire. We made the mistake of not booking Sunday lunch prior to our arrival, thinking we wouldn't have a problem popping in on Saturday morning to do so. Big mistake, HUGE! Literally no room at the Inn. So do learn by our faux pas. We did manage to sample the food on a Monday lunchtime and thought that we would be the only people there....again, we were wrong; the place was extremely well patronised, which is a great recommendation in itself. The food was very good! Something also worth mentioning was that they were more than happy to help out when we ran out of teabags and ice!
To summarise: beautiful cottage, stunning surroundings; you'd be daft not to book!
