First of all, the house is very cute and has a nice layout for spending family time. The view of the water is beautiful and we loved all the wildlife that came to visit us on our stay - deer, bunnies, and eagles. The beds were really comfortable and the comforters were very nice. We loved the view of the bay and watching fireworks going off all around on July 4th. All the ships going by made for fun Googling too. Overall, we had a great vacation in this home.
Now for the bad news. Several things were broken at the home, which alone would be no big deal, but the sum of all broken items - coffee pot lid, the grill ignitor, bathroom trash cans, toilet paper holder, the bathroom fan, and the dishwasher - was a bit much. There were also knobs missing from some furniture. We went out to the Adirondack chairs overlooking the water to watch the sunset and the chairs were so rotten we couldn’t sit in them. There were parts of the house that could’ve been cleaner. The barbecue grill was disgusting. The windows out from the living area toward the water were really dirty and we ended up cleaning them ourselves to improve our view.
The home was not well equipped. The kitchen was lacking common items like tongs, a whisk, and steak knives. The kitchen garbage can was tiny like a bathroom garbage. We filled the outside trash can in the first few days (no recycle bin either) and it took the management company a couple days to come empty our overflowing trash. There was one potholder and about two dishtowels. We ended up using the bathroom hand towels in the kitchen. There were not even enough pillowcases for all the pillows. There were no screens on the windows so were unable to open the windows in the evening because the house would fill with moths. The only rooms with curtains or blinds were the bathrooms. This made it impossible to change clothes in your room because there was no privacy. There was also a blinding glare from the water just before sundown and no way to filter it (because there were no shades). The shower curtain in the upstairs bathroom was not wide enough so water got out on the floor when someone would shower. There is no wi-fi at the home, which is not necessary, but would be nice. The selection of DVDs is lacking.
On the 4th of July, the septic alarm starting going off, which sounds like a deafening house alarm. We were not given any forewarning on this or information on what to do when this happens. Finally, a neighbor came by and told us how to shut it off. He said it goes off all the time and that he is sick of it.
Finally, there are a couple things about the listing that I feel were deceptive First, the photos of the home show a little third floor tower or lighthouse looking room. This room is locked and there is no access to it. The description does not say that there is no access to the third floor. Secondly, is the access to the beach. The description gives the impression that to get to the beach you just walk down a staircase from the backyard. The description does not include the STEEP quarter mile hike down to the staircase, which isn’t bad on the way down, but pretty difficult on the way back. Older folks or small children would probably not do well on this hike. We only went down to the beach a couple times in the ten days we were there. A couple people with us are very athletic and they had a hard time with it. I would really like to see the rental company be a little more accurate on their description of the home and the beach path.
Unfortunately, I can’t give this home a good rating because of all the items listed above. My goal in writing these comments is to make the owners aware of the issues we had in this home and to encourage them to make some improvements. We looked forward to this vacation, put out the money, and travelled all the way from California only to feel deceived and disappointed.
