I love taking my grandkids to the Oly Club because if feels like you are going back in time. The food is average, not out of this world, but not gross either. I enjoy eating here if I'm not on a schedule. If you have a schedule to keep, pick a different restaurant. The service is very slow.

We took the train to Centralia for a relaxing one night getaway from Seattle. We opted for the very reasonable room plus dinner and breakfast. We arrived at lunchtime so we ate lunch elsewhere. They have a cosy movie theater with couches and easy chairs. We had out choice between a matinee Dumbo or evening Capt. marvel and chose the latter. The movies are free for guests staying in the hotel. The hotel is a hundred year old travelers hotel. The rooms have sinks and the bathrooms are across the hall and private. Everything was clean and comfortable Besides movies and food there is a bar with pool table and the longest shuffleboard table I've ever seen. The town itself has many antique and collectible shops.

Camped nearby and went into the Olympic Club for a some food, beer, and a late movie. Movie was bad but that wasn't the McMenamin's fault. We have stayed hear often and always enjoy a cheap movie while sitting on couches and drinking beer and eating. This time, we had a small pizza and the truffle fries. Both were disappointments. The pizza (Sundried tomatoes, roasted garlic) was kind of burned and really greasy. The fries came out with a truffle dipping sauce that looked like melted chocolate. The fries weren't crisp and they had been fried up some time ago. Our normal high expectation was dashed. The Mcmenamin's beer has always been suspect (we usually choose the visiting tap) but the ambiance is always great and with the food it makes up for the beer. This time was hopefully just a miss! We will come back.

As with all McMenamins, they've done a great job showcasing this building's history. BUT, you need to know that you can't control the AC in your room, the statement that the rooms over the theater "might be a little loud until 11 pm" is an understatement, and the 24-7 train is loud. If you choose to stay there, just make an informed decision. The rooms over the theater (room 26) shook with the 9-11 pm movie, and the rooms at the other side of the building (room 2) were still very loud. We were told the AC would turn off at 1 am, but we're not sure it ever did, as it was blowing really cold at 7 am.

Room tip: The king rooms are next door to a shared bath, so closer to bathrooms than the queen rooms. #2 king is quieter than #26 king.

We stayed the night on a Saturday and found the experience to be just a hoot.

It's not far from our home of 20 years in the Portland Oregon area but we never had a chance to check it out until a last minute decision to spend our 35th wedding anniversary this year. The decision was based on a strong desire for a unique evening; not the modern, new, same old chain hotel experience - if you want one of those you have to go somewhere else.

This is a genuine McMenimans experience and we plan to do it again, soon. It's right on the train line at the Centralia Amtrak stop so would could simply hop on and be there in a couple hours with no need for a taxi or car rental.

Room tip: Some rooms have windows; others have skylights.
