We stayed at Casa da Atalaia for a week in October 2014. The flat is on the first floor of an apartment building close to Caniço's town centre. It is not a luxury flat, it is a regular flat where any family form Madeira would live. The flat has a bathroom, a big kitchen, living room with TV and sound system, a room with a double bed and a terrace with sea views. Although we did have all our lunches at different restaurants while traveling around the island, we did cook several dinners and all our breakfast at the flat. The kitchen is quite big and you can cook and prepare anything you wish to. The bedroom is spacious with some furniture where to put your clothes. The living room is nice with a sofa, TV, music system, DVD player, and a table where you can eat, use for writing, or use as a place where to put your laptop. The terrace is normal size with a small table and chairs where you can sit looking out to sea and relax. When we arrived Pedro (the owner) welcomed us to Madeira and after giving us a tour of the flat, explaining how things worked and where things were, he gave us some tips and advice about places to visit on the island and some restaurants he thought they were good. Pedro was very kind and gave us his mobile number in case we needed help with anything during our stay. Also, he told us that the Wi-Fi had some problems, but we had always access to the internet with no problems whatsoever. Our stay in the flat was just what we needed, a place where to relax and enjoy our stay on the island. Obviously, if you are thinking about staying at this flat, you will need to rent a car to move around (although the bus stop is not far, I would advise everybody to rent a car instead of using the public transport) and also to go to the nearby supermarket in Caniço to get your groceries. The place is relaxing. There is a pizzeria close by (walking distance, about 5 minutes) and, a little bit up the road, you will find a bar which doesn't look like much, but to our surprise it was completely packed on the Friday night. I am just saying this in case you want to go out and have a drink. If peace and quiet is what you are after, then you'll also get it, as the flat is located within an urbanisation which is very peaceful. The flat's location was perfect, as it is between Funchal and the Airport, so visiting places around the island is easy and handy. Funchal is about 15 minutes by car, the airport is about 12 minutes, and most places you would like to visit are easily accessible from the flat's location. My only advise would be to ask Pedro for proper directions to get to the flat, as we found out roads are hard to find in Madeira. From the airport should take you maximum 15 minutes, but you need to know where to go. If you rent a car at the airport, take the highway towards Funchal and get off at the Porto Novo junction, not the first one but the second Porto Novo/ Gaula, and as soon as you get to the main road out of this junction, turn to the left towards Funchal/Caniço's direction and on your left hand side you will see a big warehouse, the road just before the warehouse is called Estrada do Portinho, which is the road which takes you directly down towards the urbanisation where the flat is. Ask Pedro before you arrive, and I am sure he will be able to explain this better than I can.
As mentioned before, this is not a luxury flat. If you are looking for a fashionable space with the latest technology and designed furniture, then you should look elsewhere. Casa da Atalaia is a great flat with plenty of space for two people and just enough furniture to make your stay pleasant and comfortable. After few days, you will feel as if you where staying at your own place.
