We have just spent ten days at this delightful family owned and run hotel and were very happy with the whole experience.

After seamless transfers from airport to port and taxi to the hotel we arrived at the very pretty hotel, set on several levels. The first experience for us was to try the spa and we had a mud wrap, thermal jacuzzi and full body massage (other treatments available at reasonable prices).

This is a three star hotel but the efficiency, friendliness and helpfulness exceeds expectation. The rooms are modest but very clean and comfortable. Housekeeping is very good with towels changed daily and bedding every other day. If there is a negative it is that there are no tea or coffee making facilities in the room. Also the shower is a little small and the floor slippery, but these are not major issues.

The hotel runs a courtesy bus to and from the local towns frequently during the day and the evening. It is an easy ten minute walk down to the town but, the hotel being on a steep hill, the walk back up could be a challenge.

There are lovely views of the town from the terraces of the hotel especially at night when the lights come on.

The quality of staff here is high. Everyone from the room maids to the bus driver, receptionists and the many waiters are so friendly and efficient. Special mention to Salvatore, who provides a level of customer service above and beyond.

The brothers who own and run the hotel have a very hands on approach are always available to offer assistance to guests, and are there to enthusiastically greet everyone at dinner. A nice personal touch.

The happy guests here were mainly German, some French and, always a good sign, Italian which gave us the opportunity to have friendly conversations around any language barrier.

Forget the fact that this is a three-star hotel. The accommodation, while quite simple, is very clean and comfortable. The food is excellent, and I don't say that lightly. Much of the produce comes from a small farm which is run by the hotel's owning family, and they also produce the house wine in their own vineyard - it is very good and is only 15 Euros a bottle. The family is active in running the hotel and there is a big team of friendly and efficient staff. We were there in mid-September and the hotel was full throughout - around 130 guests, and all seeming very happy. Ischia is a beautiful island and the views from the hotel terraces are splendid. There are two swimming pools and two thermal pools (either take pool towels with you or hire them from the hotel at modest cost). A shuttle bus runs regularly into the nearby towns, but anyone who is reasonably fit can walk down quite easily.

This review is solely concerned with the food enjoyed at the Pergola during our stay - the accommodation and facilities at the hotel will be covered in a separate assessment by my wife.

Breakfast - great choice as far as continental-style offerings are concerned, with a plethora of cakes, rolls, cheese and ham. For the British/North American palate, there were in addition lovely scrambled eggs, fried bacon, and cereals. The rustic bread is fresh daily and is excellent. although on occasions the crust can be somewhat hard (not stale - it's just the method of baking). And to wash it all down there is an outstanding variety of fresh coffee, tea and fruit juices.

Lunch is served in the bar area (with lovely views down to the delightful coastal town of Laco Ameno) and offers standard but tasty Italian fare - the bruschetta is particularly good.

Dinner is served in a somewhat impersonal dining room, which can get quite warm. However these are minor con points and the food more than makes up for them, as one's eyes and taste buds are assailed by the huge choice on offer from the buffet for the antipasto starters - over 30 dishes (mainly vegetarian), the organic ingredients for many of which are sourced from the owners' small-holding/vineyard. The tomato dishes are particularly recommended, being rich in colour, juiciness and flavour, reflecting the unique character of the island's volcanic soil. There is such a variety of delicious antipasto that it is perfectly feasible just to binge on these dishes so that you have very little room for mains! (Don't bother with the chips though - they are cold and floppy imitations of french fries.)

After the starter buffet, the remaining courses are served at table by the very efficient, friendly and ever-helpful waiting professionals, commencing with the pasta plat du jour (lovely fresh pasta cooked just right, as to be expected). The mains were varied, with some better than others, so no surprises there, and the desserts were pleasant enough.

All in all, the quality, variety and quantity of food at breakfast and dinner was way in excess of expectations for a 3 star establishment, and this is to be highly commended. Oh, and the Crateca house wine (produced in their own nearby reclaimed vineyard) both red and white, is most definitely highly quaffable not to mention very reasonably priced. The evening tour of the beautifully restored vineyard and subsequent meal in Le Cantine di Crateca is highly recommended. The Castagna brothers - Arnaldo, Giampaolo and Piergiovanni, with their mother Concetta, have invested a lot in this project and have turned what was once a run-down jungle of vines and undergrowth into a little piece of viticulture heaven.

This is a small family run hotel with lots of character. It is not in any way luxurious but benefits from a beautiful location and very friendly staff. The hotel has 2 main swimming pools and 2 thermal pools which are lovely. Other plus point is the shuttle bus which ferries guests to local resorts and picks them up. We enjoyed getting a day ticket for the buses and travelling around the island. Ischia is lovely with lots to see. A real highlight was the day in one of the hydrotherapy parks. There are plenty around the island. This one was in Lacco Ameno and it was fabulous. For us, the rooms in the hotel were a little too basic and the food was at times very bland. It also helps if you can speak German, as this is the main language apart from Italian. Fine for me, ad I do speak German but not so great for other British guests who are very much in the minority. That said, it was a lovely week, most relaxing and enjoyable.

Just returned from time at this hotel. Firstly , wow what a view. Most of the staff very very friendly and helpful, the three owners were superb. Special thank you to Salvatori for being so helpful and attentive.
Weird set up for evening meal in that tables are allocated for your stay.We found the guests within our area very miserable and rude... staring for long periods! Would have preferred to have a choice of where to sit each evening.
Hired a boat for the afternoon and Pablo advised where best to go! Really fabulous day out Gm boat hire.
Nothing too much trouble for Pablo and the team, at times we were even driven down to the town by staff, even by Pablo himself once.
All in all very nice time had. Would love to return to this beautiful place .
Thank you !
