Although City Point, Va was probably not the most important factor in the North’s victory, it certainly deserves attention in any study of the Civil War. I think it can be argued that when General of the Army Grant set up headquarters at City Point a year before the end of the war, the remainder of the war for the South was an exercise in futility. It was a huge supply depot for the North. There is an old residential building with a video. But, visiting still requires a little imagination of what it was like in 1864.

General Grant's headquarters is under renovation, but it is a beautiful place to visit. There you learn about Dr. Eppes and his part in the civil war as it relates to general Grant. This historic place holds a wealth of knowledge pertaining to General Grant's stay in City Point. One will leave with a knowledge base that will fill in the gaps of any prior information concerning the civil war and Grant's participation.

My husband and I visited City Point last week and were thoroughly enchanted with the place. The river views are amazing and you can tour both the Appomattox Plantation buildings and General Grant's cabin. Through a short movie and lots of pictures you can truly get a feel for the layout of the area during the siege. We could feel the energy just walking the grounds and looking from the cabin to the water. Maggs Vibo was our park ranger for the tour and we couldn't have asked for a better guide. She seemed to know exactly what we needed to see and hear and feel. Thanks, Maggs! We had a wonderful time.

Admission is free. The tour starts with a 15 minute video on why Point City was a significant supply point. There isn’t much in the museum, but I enjoyed talking with Anne, the ranger. There is also a Small bookstore in the House.

Grant's headquarters for the siege of Petersburg is at Appomattox Plantation on a bluff above where the James and Appomattox Rivers meet. The Ranger was excellent and gave a wonderful presentation. The original plantation house and outbuildings are worth visiting. Grant's headquarters is mostly a very authentic reconstruction. Great introduction to the Siege of Petersburg.
