“What an amazing place”
Reviewed 26 November 2016 for a stay in November 2016

Had our annual family Thanksgiving get-together at the Lodge. There were 8 adults and 6 children- ages 4-16. The views are spectacular, and the home is just beautiful. The kitchen has everything you will need, and more, to cook for large groups, and is laid out in a way that allows everyone to congregate and socialize without being in the way while meals are prepared. It was actually fun preparing our Thanksgiving dinner! The kids, and adults had blast- not one complaint, or even a grumble after 4 days with 14 people under one roof! We are all looking forward to our return next year- sooner if I can find an excuse! I saw in another review that there were bug issues- I did not see a single bug in the house during our stay. There is plenty of parking area, and the driveway splits at the house so access to the lower and middle levels is 'stair free' and makes unloading and loading vehicles really convenient, and was a real plus for my elderly father. If your looking for a mountain cabin for a large group, Hensley Hollow Lodge is just an amazing place!

“Great family vacation spot!”
Reviewed 7 August 2016 for a stay in July 2016

HH was a great find for a family vacation with none of us having to drive more than 4 1/2 hours. We wanted to try something different than our usual beach trip and this was perfect.
First off, the owners were very easy to work with and ensured that the house was in good shape. One of the difficult things about renting a house is not knowing what paper products, linens and cook things to bring. But as advertised, this place had it all!
The bedrooms are varied and four of them do have nice decks off of them. This allowed us to enjoy places to gather in smaller groups Whcih is where one can have the best talks. Unfortunately not all of our family ended up aiming, so we didn't use the loft area, but I can see how helpful that would be with a bunch of kids.
The game room downstairs was enjoyed by the older as younger of our group. The various gamie consoles were a treat for the kids who did come and there were plenty of games and movies from which to choose.
The fire pit was used a lot and even the hot tub during the heat of July. Loved having the marshmallow holders!
We were happy to be able to bring the dog, but did not expect to have to keep her on a leash when outside since it was at the top of a mountain. But there is a bear feeding area and you WILL see bears!
Walking the dog was strenuous. It's steep everywhere!
My disabled husband was able to stay on the main floor, but showering was tricky. The upstairs shower was small and the other upstairs bathroom was pretty small so getting in and out of the tub (with our shower chair) took two of us. But other than the shower, one could stay here with limited mobility pretty easily.
We took advantage of the available kayaks and canoes and inner tubes at the Shenandoah River. We also went to Luray Caverns and the water park was visited twice during the week. We even made the half hour trip to the movies.
All in all, this was a great vacation.

“Beautiful, Quiet, Everything you could ask for.”
Reviewed 10 February 2015 for a stay in February 2015

The setting was beautiful, the owner was reasonable and easy to work with and communicate with. The cost was reasonable, the hot tub was great. Everything you could ask for! So many amenities and little necessities are provided that really all you need is a change of clothes and some food. We'll be back next year. Pretty steep driveway. No issue in the clear dry conditions we had, but I could see a need for 4wd in mud/snow.

“Perfect Mountain Retreat”
Reviewed 11 November 2014 for a stay in October 2014

Ed and Meshiel have an amazing home! The lodge was perfect for a weekend with family and friends!!

We recently stayed at HHL with a group of 12 people. The lodge is huge and had PLENTY of room. Ed and Mishiel were there to great us and make sure our arrival was successful. We invited them to dinner our first night and enjoyed their company very much! Not only did the lodge have plenty of room, but it had everything we needed; plenty of plates/cookware/sheets/towels for a large group. All and all just really well set up for a relaxing weekend. The view from the lodge speaks for itself overlooking the Shenandoah forest. The fire pit was awesome and provided hours of entertainment for our group. Ed provided plenty of firewood for us and we were sure to use it! Skyline drive is a short 15 minute trip from the house and provided great views and hiking (hiking trail about 20 minutes away, off skyline drive).

I would not hesitate to stay at the Lodge again and highly recommend it!!

“Big house”
Reviewed 13 May 2014 for a stay in May 2014

Big house in Elkton about 30 minute drive to JMU. Quite a few decent restaurants between the house and JMU. So if you are at JMU for a graduation or parents weekend this is a quieter option out of the traffic of Harrisonburg. We reserved it last minute to attend JMU graduation. Directions from GPS were terrible. Very easy to get off 33 to Tanyard Bridge. Not a bad drive however some of the roads getting to the house are a little steep. 4WD would be needed in icy/snowy weather. House was very nice with lots of beds and lots of room. Downstairs included pool table, air hockey, dart board and arcade game. Patio outside with fireplace. Yard is very steep so there really isn't any useable "yard". Gravel driveway. Owner easy to work with. Cleaning could have been better. Also the place had tons of stink bugs. I cleaned them up every day. Not much the owner can do about them. They are just a big nuisance so be prepared. Views were ok. Basically just looking at the surrounding forest.

Thank you for letting us serve you at Hensley Hollow Lodge.
You are correct that our 4,900 sq ft lodge, built on 23 acres in the Shenandoah Mountains does require 4 WD during inclement weather. We do have additional parking at the owners cabin at the base of our driveway. The steepness of the mountain terrain requires driveways to be zig zagged. And GPS does give very poor directions. I hope we adequately explained this to you, and detailed good driving directions prior to your booking, in the generic email we sent.
We are sorry if this rural Mountain Retreat did not fully meet your expectations. A log cabin is very expensive to build and maintain and provides many challenges from the weather and nature. The log stack or walls, actually shrink up to 2", after initial construction. This requires expansion joints over doors and windows and false interior walls on the exterior walls in many places. Our shrinkage should be complete after these 9 years. This allows us to inspect and reseal certain areas.
Chinese stink bugs were apparently brought to the USA, near Reading Pennsylvania about 1998 and are migrating South and East. They are now an epidemic in 8 states and are causing millions of dollars of crop damage, and destroying some orchards. They have no known natural predator in the USA (except for the wood pecker who made a hole in my shed). We have a full time nine year contract with Permatreat, but they "exclude" many abundant insects (including Chinese stink bugs and lady bugs and carpenter bees etc) from their warranty. However we have consulted with their experts and other scientist on a successful treatment plan. WE WILL DEFEAT THE CHINESE STINK BUGS. We have researched them extensively as they are in every home in the Shenandoah Valley and North to Pennsylvania. They have a tough outer shell on their back which makes most pesticides very slow to work.
We have taken a month off from work (may 13 to June 13)to finish eliminating them. We have treated all interior access points and those that make it into the living area now die within a few minutes. We have removed and replaced knee walls in the loft and all window and door trim. We are sealing all interior and exterior access points and treating the entire outside of the lodge with insect repellant and insecticide in the stain. We are removing all interior and exterior trim and treating and then sealing with new caulking and Great Stuff Spray foam insulation. The lodge will be entirely air tight by June 1. This lost time from work and treatment will cost us about $20,000 but we will defeat them. Our last count was about 20 stink bugs make it into the lodge in one day and they die within a few minutes.
I hope you enjoyed your special graduation event at JMU. And we hope we can serve you again.
