The gorge is a beauty to behold. The lodge we stayed had a great view. The restaurant provided a view of the gorge with decent, reasonably priced food, and good service. There were deer, turkeys, and black bears were recently seen. This was a great place to hike, picnic, or stay. We had two meals, dinner and breakfast.

The lodge we stayed in was on the very edge of the cliffs. The depth of the cliffs was amazing. Also has a variety of easy to difficult trails to take and see some of the sights.

We were only able to visit for a couple of hours but the views we saw were breathtaking! We stopped first at the Russell Fork Overlook. The walk from the parking lot to the overlook is a bit rocky in places so take care if you are a little unsteady on your feet like me. That said the views were worth it. Likewise, the Towers Overlook provided us a spectacular view of the Russell Fork River. Sadly, poor weather and our tight schedule kept us from seeing more of the park. But we did take time to eat at the restaurant.

The food here was average. My wife had a Kentucky Hot Brown - good but nothing like the real thing we had at the Brown Hotel in Louisville. I had the blackened chicken wrap which was good. I do recommend the Coconut Delight cake. It is homemade and delicious.

My husband had to see Breaks Interstate Park after hearing a program about them on the radio. It is called the Grand Canyon of the East. Although it is quite lovely and does have a deep gorge, that appellation is a of an bit exaggeration. We were happy to spend a night there, but don't feel a need to go back. Perhaps if you are planning to hike more than one trail or do the zip line or other activity, you would want to spend more time.

We had a large room in one of the older lodge buildings. If you are on the second floor, you have a good view of the gorge from the balcony. There are woods right behind the room. We had a lengthy visit from a pileated woodpecker attacking bugs in a downed log below our balcony. The room had two queen beds, two tables, and a large mini-fridge. It could hold a medium-size pizza box. A microwave would be nice since the restaurant isn't always open.

There are two sinks - one in the bathroom and one just outside the bathroom. All amenities such as shampoo, tissues, etc. are provided. The towels were good, but there weren't many places to hang them. The wifi was weak, but worked just fine for checking email or getting the weather. The mattresses and pillows were comfortable.

On the downside, this lodge building is one of the older ones. The tub fills with water when you shower. The HVAC unit is very noisy. We were awakened all night by it coming on and going off.

The staff was very friendly. We had no problem just showing up and getting a room. It was not the height of the season when we visited. Summer might be a different story. There is a gift shop with interesting items in the registration/restaurant building.

The road to the park was windy, but not bad at all.

I've been visiting The Breaks since I honeymooned there in 1985 and have enjoyed every single visit.
The views are magnificent! The cabins are spotless. The pool, lake, hiking, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities are awesome! The restaurant food was great, and the staff can't be beat!
Be sure to take the elk tour; they are beautiful!
This place and all the experiences it offers are well worth the slow but scenic drive up the winding mountain.
Be sure to tell Herletta at the front desk hello for Dee, and also Dalton and Corey if you work up the nerve to do that gorgeous zip line!
