This connects the Escalate Grand Staircase National Monument to Bryce Canyon City Utah. Was a old mule wagon route. Is now a paved, curvy, scenic road with 12% grades and 95% without guard rails. Is a THRILL to drive! We loved it. Take the time to read the placards at the scenic views. Bison are said to be there.

The scenery cannot be beat and it is the furthest from the crush of civilization I have ever been. We saw 3 cars on our 90 minute drive from Capitol Reef down to Escalante. Fill up your tank, bring water with you just in case.

Wow, wow and wow. Built by the CCC and obviously recently resurfaced, the road is excellent. Many people will only travel the section to Bryce Canyon, but the rest of the road deserves a visit. There are a couple 10% grades on the route so it is challenging in places. There are multiple visitor centers and many overlooks.

If you are traveling through the area, you can’t miss this Scenic Byway – Awesome roads hugging some great terrain! Be aware of bicycles and other cars as well – some good places to pull off and take in the views as well! Actually not as scary as some other roads classified as “scenic” in my opinion.

Incredible vistas. Devils backbone is not to be missed. The most scenic arid terrain drive I’ve seen.
