Owner description: Inner Space Cavern was discovered in 1963 by the Texas Highway Department. During construction of Interstate 35, they were required to do regulation core testing, which required them to drill into the ground. As they did this, they inadvertently drilled into the cave 8 times out of the 20 samples they took. Once they lost those 8 drill bits, they knew they hit a cave. They searched all over the surrounding area but could not find any access into the cave. So, they drilled a 2 foot wide hole down through 33.5 feet of limestone bedrock. The hole became known as the Discovery Hole as it was the very first entrance into the cave (and the only one for several months!). As they explored, they have found over five miles of cave, making Inner Space Cavern the fourth largest cavern in Texas!

We packed up and headed to the Hill Country for camping and caving.

Hidden Tour was fun with the older kids because everyone gets a flashlight because the tour is outside the normal lighted paths.

We’d do it again, different tour of course!

Thank JW H

If you are planning a trip down I35, consider a stop at the Inner Space Cavern. It is literally right off the highway. They offer different levels of exploration, with the most frequent (about every 15-30 min) the Adventure Tour. I had wanted to take my 12 & 10 y/o on the Hidden Passages tour, which is guided with a flashlight, however the next available tour was about 2 hours from our arrival and is not frequently offered. The Adventure Tour is a fairly easy walk, along lit paths, with an inclined entry/ exit and some slippery spots due to the water, but they generally have rugs in place and will advise on the slippery areas. I advise wearing good walking shoes that you don't mind getting wet/ dirty. Our tour was bout 1 hr in length, provided by a young adult who was very knowledgeable. You may even get to see a few small suspended sleeping bats in the entry way depending on the time of year.

This is a perfect destination when traveling in the Austin and Round Rock area. Even locals should go. Perfect for families with good walkways and lighting through the caverns and a play and picnic area with live animals outside. The caverns are beautiful and very different from the caves on the East Coast I've been to. The tours have three levels. We went on the first with included an hour and 1/2 fairly easy walk. Some hills coming out so minimal health and energy needed. Enough lighting not to be scary for young kids. Even well traveled people like my husband and myself were in awe of the beauty of the limestone formations. They guide was knowledgeable and patient for picture takers.
There were also two other levels of tours, one with flashlights in smaller spaces and another 3 - 4 hour exploration tour.
Fantastic and worth going. Also worth the entrance fee.

I have driven past this location many times and after finally visiting , I regret having waited. The caverns are beautiful inside. There are many different rock formations to see. The tour guide was highly informed and did a great job.

This is a good place to take people who have never seen caverns! It's not too far away and it is very interesting. Hard to believe that you are under the interstate!
