Our host sue was absolutely brilliant and she made our trip that little more special. She recommended all the nice places. The accommodation is great for big groups and it is close to all the good places in Wales.

thank you james for your review. It was a pleasure hosting your family in Drake House and I'm sure you will come again - but be sure to bring your aunts/uncles/cousins and parents again - they are such great company.

“Fantastic Holiday! Shame about the accommodation”
Reviewed 10 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We stopped in Drakes House for 6 nights between July 30th - August 6th.

The first thing I should say is that 1 week before we went on holiday we were told that we had been moved to a different property on site - so we didn't end up with the views of the estuary - Instead had a view of the back of another building.

At time of writing, the description of the accommodation is a 'tad' misleading. The accommodation is less family orientated and more student digs. Set at the back of an industrial estate the property is apparently child friendly. Be prepared as there are locks on every doors that would be very simple for a small child to lock.

The play area pictured in the description was good fun.... when we had access to it. However, most evenings we had to put up with locals arriving to play football (on what we thought was a private play area). The last night of our stay (Thursday) the "lads" were there until 9.50pm before driving off. Please bear in mind that we had young children with us and this could be a factor in getting your kids to sleep. Our kids regularly came inside because there were older kids that had just arrived on the site. When asked about this Sue told my Sister-in-Law that they have an agreement with the local youth that means they are allowed to use it but must respect people staying there! They were there most evenings and would stay until late – hardly respectful.

The description shows Wi-Fi and Internet access as part of the amenities. However, this is only in the Cove cafe that has strange opening hours. In Drakes house there was no access to Wi-Fi so we felt the description was misleading. Child friendly but no Wi-Fi??!! My teenage daughter was really not impressed! All joking aside it is something that ‘some’ will definitely look for when booking a place (be it for work reasons or otherwise). If this is you then do not book here as it does not offer Wi-Fi!

The living room had more of a teachers common room feel to it - I half expected to see my old history teacher Mr. Clifton walk in with his glorious Kevin Keegan perm and make himself a cup of coffee. Fortunately we are early risers and were out of the front door at breakfast and out all day. The accommodation being used merely as someplace to sleep between the fun days out.

The bathroom/prison showers were varied - as one shower was too cold, one had no shower curtain at all and the other was "Holy baby Jesus" hot! - To make it a fun game I won't tell you which is which!

My wife had to sleep on the floor because the bunk bed she was going to sleep on didn't appear to be safe. Still it meant I got to take a funny picture of her with the dog!

The sofas were a mess. The TV pictured in the description is obviously the bigger, more expensive better looking brother to the one we ended up with. Satellite TV you say? - Where was that then? Gee that sure is a lovely looking cooker! - Sure is a lot nicer than the "ready for the scrap metal man" one we ended up with. Am I sounding bitter about the late accommodation switch?

On top of all this we had to put up with other guests and employees of the Cove Café blocking our only access in and out of our designated parking area! We would have to waste our time looking for the owners of the cars in order to get them moved! Admittedly this was only a problem during the first couple of days as something was obviously said. There is a big parking area round the back of the Cove next to the estuary, why couldn’t the employees just park there?

In conclusion - Drakes house is a very, VERY basic property. The amenities are (at writing) not to be trusted. I think this site is more suited to people looking to use the sailing facilities/hen or stag parties/scouts or people trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. It is definitely not a child friendly site and not a place to take a family - unless you really don't like them.

That said I had a great time! But this was down to the company that we chose to holiday with and the long days we spent away from the property. Pembroke and the rest of Pembrokeshire provided long and enjoyable days with beautiful coastline views. The beaches are fantastic (and for the most dog friendly) and all in close proximity to where we stayed.
P.S – We contacted the owner immediately after the stay to voice our concerns (we also left a list of improvements we thought she could make). We feel that we have been more than fair with how we have conducted ourselves and given Sue every opportunity to address the concerns we raised. I feel that her aggressive response to my Sister-in-Law (a series of emails) was not appropriate. After that I felt it was important to warn others looking to stay here.

There is a saying in life – “You get what you pay for”. You don’t even get that! We were treated badly, had the accommodation that we booked switched at the 11th hour and ended up with roughly half the amenities we had paid for. In case I have not been clear -

DO NOT STAY HERE! Families Avoid!

This negative review relates to another review dated 8th August 2016 and is correctly attributed to Drake House at Llanion Cove. The only additional comments that can be made are that Sue, who manages the accommodation, maintains that communication following the booking process was clear and a sound rational given regarding a switch to the neighbouring property relating to the dogs that were brought on holiday. Any emails from Sue to the person who booked this accommodation after the end of the holiday were an attempt to discuss the issues that were being raised. These emails were terminated at Julie's request. As stated in the previous review the issues raised will be considered in full and investigated as appropriate.
