We thoroughly enjoyed this lovely estuary cycle trail, watching the sheep and cows relaxing on the sand flats and the various birds making the most of this habitat. Car free, stress free, well signposted with information panels giving you insights into the area. Barmouth is a lovely coastal resort, where you can easily pass a few hours before you make the return trip to Dolgellau.

This trail (for walkers and cyclists) is advertised as one of the best, most scenic trails in the country. It is! Following the bed of an ex-railway line, the well defined and maintained path runs along the river from Dolgellau to Fairbourne (though it is worth diverting towards the end of the trail to experiencing crossing the mainline railway bridge over the estuary into Barmouth. From Barmouth town centre there are local bus services back to Dolgellau, unless you wish to retrace the 10 miles back on foot/bike. If you have a choice, do the walk at low tide for fantastic views of the sand/mud flats along the way.

We have either cycled or walked this trail many times, but this was the first time with our daughter. It was fantastic to be able to share it with her.

Wear good comfortable shoes and take refreshments with you as the is only the George Inn from Dolgellau to Barmouth approx 10 miles. But well worth it

This trail is the old railway line from Dolgellau to Barmouth and is a beautiful c.10mile flat route following the estuary as it winds its way gently to the sea

There are two sets of public toilets en route as well as a number of picnic tables for the enjoyment of “al fresco refreshments” which you can buy AT EITHER END of the route.
