I've been there several times now, Beale Street is blocked off to vehicle traffic but on Wednesday evenings motorcycle riders bring their bikes in and line the streets. Even if you're not a bike enthusiast, you should enjoy the show. You will find people and bikes of every sort imaginable; truly beautiful graphics on tanks, rat bikes, bikes lit up in neon, trikes, decked out bicycles, people doing acrobatics, street artists and so on. And don't worry about your personal safety, cops are always around. I talked to several city cops and they said that actually bike night was the least problematic night of the week. There's plenty of great food to be had, great music and you will find that in most cases, even the toughest looking bikers are friendly, hard working folks just like the rest of us. When a person has $30,000+ invested in a bike, you know that person isn't a bum. In addition, at night the neon street signs and lit up bikes make for some great photographic opportunities.
