“Good location to explore Isle of Lewis”
Reviewed 5 August 2018 for a stay in August 2018

Catriona, the owner was great with communicating all the important details about the house- location, how to enter, what she expected us to find on arrival and how she wished for us to leave it upon departure. The house is well located near several great sites and we enjoyed meeting some of the neighbors while on some short walks.
The house itself has a dated feeling to it- much of the architecture in the area seems to have a similar style. In the house everything worked fine and it was suitable for our needs. The fire place was a bonus. However the beds were not very comfortable and there was a certain amount of mustiness that did mostly dissipate once we aired out the place. It felt a bit like staying at 'grandma's house.'

I agree the house has a dated feel to it as the older houses in the area were built immediately after WW2 and in our case in 1951. We have tried to retain some of the older features while modernising the kitchen and bathroom and I know this will not be to everyone's taste. Mainly people seem to appreciate the older features and this has always been a family home, well used still by friends and family.
We will keep modernising but will be guided by visitors as to how much we do this. I do not want it to be featureless so that it could be anywhere.
I am a little mystified about the beds as they are all new, having been replaced last year and I bought good quality mattresses. I appreciate that a bed is a very personal item and everyone has different preferences.
I wonder if the "mustiness" was caused by the fact that we turned the house over very quickly that day. I had intended closing the house for a few days but we took the booking at a slightly reduced rate.
The previous week friends of mine had visited and the weather was not great so the windows may not have been opened during their stay. This is a very good reminder to us that no matter how short the gap between visitors we must let the Lewis wind blow through the house as would normally be the case. We are quite particular about preparation for our guests.

I have visited this house before and always want to return. The house is amazingly situated and very comfortable. As a Croft house it retains a unique atmosphere of its working and living past whilst providing all the modern comfort individuals or groups need. The owner knows the whole history of this family home and its setting which adds to the ambiance of the house and will ensure visitors have the best possible stay on beautiful Lewis. I love it and will certainly return again and again.

Looking forward to your return visits and so glad you found it inspirational.
I have been looking at the possibility of targeting the anscestry market as the house is so much part of the community. It would be great to help people discover their roots

“Ideal accommodation for Lewis break”
Reviewed 16 April 2018 for a stay in April 2018

We stayed here for a week during the Easter holidays. In a beautiful location and the house was just perfect for our family of four (two young children). The house is very comfortable and sitting down in the evening by the open fire after a busy day visiting all the beautiful sights in the local area was so relaxing. The owner was very helpful and great to deal with. Can't wait for our next trip back to this wonderful community.

I'm so glad you found the house comfortable and the open fire makes it a welcoming place in the evening.
I always aim to be available at the end of the telephone for guests to help with any queries or assist with any difficulties. After all a holiday should allow you to turn off from life's responsibilities

“Cosy and comfortable, home and hearth for the west coast of Lewis”
Reviewed 3 September 2017 for a stay in August 2017

The house sits in the village of Garenin on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis and is perfectly located for the Standing Stones of Callanish, the Black House village, the Harris Woolen Mill, brochs and beaches. The house is lovely, has everything you need and easily sleeps six people. After hikes and visits through the day we snuggled up next to the fireplace, sipping whisky and playing cards. Our stay was all too short. If you looking for somewhere in Lewis within easy reach of Stornoway and all the lovely places in this magical place, look no further

“Excellent bungalow, well sited,sleeps 6”
Reviewed 26 July 2017 for a stay in June 2017

The location js excellent, close to the beach and the Black House village.
The bungalow is well appointed with plenty of maps, books ,etc., in fact all that you would need. Within easy reach of many attractions including the Harris Tweed Mill which provides an excellent guided tour. We travelled all around Lewis and Harris but need to return to see more.
