The entire property is beautiful. They allow photographs just no flash. Staff is exceedingly knowledgeable and friendly.
I am keenly aware of the exceedingly wretched history connected to this place. As I have traveled the Highlands numerous times and love Scotland, and am an avid history buff. I am extremely sensitive to the dark history, and yet ongoing challenges here. Heck,... all over Scotland.
On this road trip I decided to just visit places and take in what I could learn and see. I felt after visiting this gorgeous dwelling that I now have an even more keen awareness to what so many lost and so many gained in the clearances.
The reality is those that went against convention and fought for their flag of Blue and White repeatedly lost everything. Later further actions ended in some having a great deal and many having little to nothing. It is a game that plays out in history again and again. In the end many feel that the Lairds screwed their people badly.
Regardless of all of this, this building and its history is interesting and just as valid as any other history. If you wish to ignore the darker side of history, it was a lovely visit. The guids were informative and kind. The raptor show is absolutely fantastic. The gardens lush and beautiful. It was well worth the visit. And one of the pictures of one of Sutherlands looks just like Donald Sutherland... it was almost creepy.
I did not see the dead animal trophy head room that so many are complaining about. But it would certainly with the territory and history of this grand, old place.
