The entire property is beautiful. They allow photographs just no flash. Staff is exceedingly knowledgeable and friendly.

I am keenly aware of the exceedingly wretched history connected to this place. As I have traveled the Highlands numerous times and love Scotland, and am an avid history buff. I am extremely sensitive to the dark history, and yet ongoing challenges here. Heck,... all over Scotland.

On this road trip I decided to just visit places and take in what I could learn and see. I felt after visiting this gorgeous dwelling that I now have an even more keen awareness to what so many lost and so many gained in the clearances.

The reality is those that went against convention and fought for their flag of Blue and White repeatedly lost everything. Later further actions ended in some having a great deal and many having little to nothing. It is a game that plays out in history again and again. In the end many feel that the Lairds screwed their people badly.

Regardless of all of this, this building and its history is interesting and just as valid as any other history. If you wish to ignore the darker side of history, it was a lovely visit. The guids were informative and kind. The raptor show is absolutely fantastic. The gardens lush and beautiful. It was well worth the visit. And one of the pictures of one of Sutherlands looks just like Donald Sutherland... it was almost creepy.

I did not see the dead animal trophy head room that so many are complaining about. But it would certainly with the territory and history of this grand, old place.

Best Castle in Scotland. Well worth a visit, you will get most of the day here. Beautiful Castle, stunning gardens and a first class restaurant for lunch, coff and cakes.

Thoroughly enjoyed the visit here. We seemed to hit the (recently rearranged?) car park at a really busy time, but finding a space was easy and there were marshalls on duty. We opted to explore the gardens first to see if the house got a little quieter which worked well.

It was great to wander around and catch the different views whilst exploring the garden. You were also able to get fairly close to the birds of prey while it was quiet which was lovely. There was also some informative signage explaining a little about the birds.

The falconry display was excellent and definitely worth timing your visit to experience.

The house itself had lots of different elements of more recent history. Take the time to stop and look at posters, books or the detail of some of the settings. Lots to enjoy.

There were some negatives but nothing detracted from the experience for us. A portacabin toilet right in front of the entrance is a blight as is allowing parking quite close to the building - you see so many photos of the building from the seaward side, but few from the landward side; this goes some way to explaining why.

The piper outside was terrible. Not a good example of the iconic instrument for visitors.

Even during our short visit, several people were daunted by the steps both inside and outside. I accept that the issues inside are likely unavoidable, but a more mobility friendly external path / route / other option would be hugely appreciated and not that difficult to arrange.

We had a wonderful visit and enjoyed it thoroughly. The castle, restaurant and falconry display and the garden were beautiful. Read a review wingeing about stairs.... so if you have physical disability avoid this, otherwise have a great day out.
