“Worth the effort”

Reviewed 2 April 2018 via mobile

Great place to explore.
We chose to park in the first part of the car parking by the information centre. You can drive all the way up to Fancy’s farm and park right outside the Battery or drive half way and overlook the sea. The walk to the Battery is very scenic with plenty of things to look at. If you have a dog I would recommend leaving them on a lead as there are some steep drops and also cars.

Unsurprisingly the guns are no longer there, however the buildings and structures are still visible. Some of which you can explore. The ghost tunnels (middle stores) are a must (torch on phone also a must)

I would recommend visiting this place.

Thank Gelldorr

Tucked right away and not very welling posted but please do search out. Great piece of history and stunning scenery. There were a murder of cows when we went adding to the atmosphere. Great for history buffs, military and those in search of local sights

Poorly signposted, car park badly marked, but this is an atmospheric place even (maybe especially) in fog and cold. Whilst a fan of places not being overly supervised and managed, this fun and interesting London could have better information boards does around (there are one or two), and the number of people who don't clear up after their dogs really is pretty gross.
Fun place to visit but don't go to Portland just for this.(maybe especially) in fog and cold. Once you find the car parks at the top of the hill there is lots to see and explore, great views over Chesil beach, The Verne fort ramparts, old railway bridges and inclines and the High Angle Battery.
The dedicated explorer will go online to find out about the rock pillar Nicodemus's Knob !

Terrific views, good walks and some really interesting history. Lots of parking available. in the old quarry there is also lots of wildlife. But overall the plaques explaining the history of the battery really worth a visit.
