“Unbelievably brilliant!!”

We stayed at Pitt Hayes Cottage for a week and couldn't fault it. The property is large and we felt spoilt for room. There are 2x twin bedrooms downstairs, a large open plan kitchen, a smaller living area and conservatory with breath taking views over Fortuneswell and Chesil Beach. There is also a utility room and shower room downstairs. Upstairs is a further twin room, large family bathroom and double bedroom. I have to stay that we have never stayed somewhere so fully equipped. We normally have a tendancy to take essentials: sharp knife, tin opener and loo roll etc just in case as some places aren't brilliantly equipped. We needn't have bothered....neverending utensils, bowls and cookware, a dishwasher and a fab range oven greeted us. Even more impressed were we with the washing machine and dryer in the utility room complete with laundry liquid/fabric conditioner - utter bonus with 3x grubby boys! It was great to have a full size fridge/freezer to store food as well, rather than your typical self-catering tiny fridge ice-box. Everything has been thought of. The property was comfy, clean and tidy on arrival and all cookware/ linen was spotless (I add that copious towels were also supplied for our stay). To re-cover a couple of previous review points the house is set on a steep hillside (hence the amazing views) so yes, there are 10-12 steps up to the property and also steep paths nearby (down to Fortuneswell or up to the hilltop summit) but nothing that we and our 3 boys of 5, 7 and 9 couldn't easily handle. The water pressure IS dodgy especially when taps/ showers are run at the same time BUT this is the same across Portland and the front garden IS shared (as the owners are next door) but the grassed area is outside the rented section and the other shared piece is a decked area so you can hang your washing or have a BBQ. Our boys merrily played away and no-one disturbed them. If anything when we did bump into the owners it resulted in a friendly chat! The owners are a really lovely couple and the neighbours the other side equally great and we got lots of info on where to visit (for free!) from both....we were extremely grateful. I also add that when we mentioned about a dim bulb in the hall (causing a fretful 5yr old overnight) the owners jumped in the car and went out to replace it immediately despite our 'protests' it could wait. They couldn't do enough. All in all we had a brilliant break and were sad to have to come home to surburbia - we would most definitely return and would highly recommend this property for anyone else looking to book. Top marks!

“Fabulous , totally exceeded our expectations”
Reviewed 23 June 2014 for a stay in May 2014

Had a wonderful week at the cottage , touring the local area , as well
as walking on the Island itself which has some interesting history as
well as amazing views , ranging from crashing waves at the " Bill " to
the spectacular scenery of the Chesil Bank as it ranges along the
Jurassic coast in the distance .
Found the Cottage very clean and spacious with all the facilities we
needed for our holiday , it is in a truly beautiful and quiet location ,
easily accessible yet tucked away with good parking .
Found good food at the Lobster Pot restaurant out on the Bill , and
enjoyed an evening pint at at the Cove Inn Chiswell right on the top of
the beach , so had some amazing sunsets as well .
We hope we will return at some point to this lovely place.

“Stunning views but cottage facilities lacking and shared garden/patio not mentioned”
Reviewed 21 July 2013 for a stay in July 2013

We had a wonderful week for weather in Portland. The holiday cottage is a good size but with 6 of us staying was a little cramped. The kitchen had reasonable facilities, however, the cleanliness of some of the kitchen items left a little to be desired.
There are stunning views from the conservatory, however, due to there being only one blind and the conservatory being open to the sitting room and kitchen, this made the whole house too hot. Fans were not provided - blinds and fans would have been welcome.
The water pressure at the property is terrible and could do with some work - especially if 2 families are sharing. The shower turned to a trickle if anyone even ran a tap whilst it was being used.
The house is on a quiet road and there is offroad parking for 2 cars. Access to the property is very steep though up sets of stone steps. The garden is at the front of the property and wasn't really suitable for young children due to a drop to the path. Also the garden and patio were shared with the owners next door which wasn't mentioned in the booking.
The property felt to be in need of some modernisation to make it more comfortable.
We also found that the bedrooms had been poorly cleaned with a build up of dust on top of the valance sheet in the master bedroom and cobwebs invading the drawers we could get open - many had simply ceased to open any more.
On a positive note - this was one of the few properties we have stayed in where hand soap, washing liquid, dishwasher tablets, kitchen roll, a welcome tray (tea, coffee, milk and biscuits), toilet rolls and cleaners and clothes washing liquitabs and softener had been provided - it was much appreciated.
Clear directions for how to reach the property would have been nice as the location is difficult to find by sat nav.
All in all, the property was comfortable and with a little additional attention to detail would be near perfect. The views were simply stunning.

“Lovely, spacious, comfortable cottage with fabulous views”
Reviewed 28 May 2013 for a stay in May 2013

We had a great time in Portland. There were 9 of us in total (4 adults, 4 children and a baby). We enjoyed visiting Portland castle, Fancy's Farm, various beaches and Portland Bill. The cottage suited our needs and was a very nice place to stay. It was lovely to sit having breakfast looking out over the sea.
