My family and I (husband, 4 year old son) and I stayed at Hogchester Cottage for the first time in August 2016. It was such a perfectly relaxing family holiday that we booked again for Christmas 2016 and took my Mum with us.

Chantal and Rob are great hosts. They provided a lovely welcome book, locally sourced supplies for the kitchen and wonderful little welcome gifts for our son Harry. The cottage was immaculately clean and tidy and we had everything we needed to cook or even bake!

Despite the holiday cottage being next door to the owners we always felt like we had enough privacy and equally never felt like we were encroaching on the owners space. The land at Hogchester is fantastic to explore with children. Rob has gone to great lengths to encourage children to play outdoors naturally providing details of where to try a stream walk, climb trees and use the rope swing.

The views from the cottage bedroom windows are magnificent, we could watch the sunrise and sunset over the fields and as far as Charmouth beach.

Rob and Chantal's children were equally welcoming and very kind to our son Harry.

The different fields to explore and the animals at Hogchester make it a truly memorable experience. We all loved feeding the goats and collecting eggs from the chickens, our son was very sad to say goodbye to the goats especially.

I would fully recommend the family campfire and the stargazing experience that Rob and Chantal offer at Hogchester. We were fortunate to stay during the time of the Perseid Meteor Shower (usually anytime between July 17th and August 24th however it peaked around 11th August during our stay in 2016). We literally saw hundreds of shooting stars, an amazing experience.

There's plenty to do in the local area also, Chantal has provided a great book advising of the best beaches, cafes, bars, activities etc we have managed to tick many of these off our to do list over the couple of weeks we have stayed at Hogchester however as we already knew the area we had a few of our own favourite spots too these being-

Sunrise walk at Golden Cap (refer to National Trust website for an easier walk for children) - a great walk at any time of day but sunrise is especially stunning... worth a Winter trip to Hogchester so that you don't have to get up too early to see this! We spend Boxing Day morning walking up to Golden Cap, the most memorable Christmas we've had to date!

Rousdon Village Bakery - Clive is the owner (and the baker) he's a no nonsense kind of guy and his business is the same! Home made, fresh, huge portions, out of this world tasting food! A visit to Hogchester has to be accompanied with a visit to this place! It should be illegal not to do the two in the same week!

We all had a fabulous time at Hogchester. Our hosts were exceptionally thoughtful, down to the age-appropriate welcome gifts for our kids (age 2 & 5), lovely toys to play with, Aga cookbooks - they really have thought of everything (does anyone really want hair straighteners on holiday???)! The host children, Olly and Bella were amazing. On our first morning, they took us into what will be a wildflower meadow to fly kites and they also took our kids to feed the goats and included them in games, even though they were a few years older than our girls.

It's taken me months to write this review (sorry Chantal!) and my daughters still talk about our holiday all the time, especially Biscuit their favourite pygmy goat. They loved being able to feed the goats, collect eggs and pick apples from the orchard. We live in the middle of Bristol, so I was looking for somewhere which would get our girls outside and playing with animals, as they are hesitant or scared around even just cats and dogs, and this really fitted the bill. On the first day they were scared to go into the field with the pygmy goats and sheep but pretty soon they were going off on their own to feed the goats. They loved the tyre swing and being able to freely explore the farm. although the trampoline in our garden was the real favourite.

The cottage is comfortable and has everything you could want on holiday with children, including toys (mainly Melissa & Doug, not cheap plastic rubbish!), books for various ages, baby monitor, high chair, kids' kitchenware etc etc. You may want to take a blackout blind if your kids are used to sleeping in the dark as the curtains aren't that good at excluding light, otherwise I really can't think of anything I would improve. I was a bit intimidated by the idea of an aga, but it was really easy to use and there are cookbooks there to help you out. I even managed to make a dessert using only eggs we collected from the garden, apples we picked in the orchard and sugar which was provided in the kitchen and the meringue was perfect.

It also couldn't be in a better location, since it's only 5min to Charmouth and slightly longer to Lyme.

In short, a wonderful cottage with really thoughtful, friendly hosts - really couldn't fault it. I look forward to returning in a couple of years and seeing the wildflower meadows in bloom.

Thanks for your lovely words. We were so chuffed to see the girls really grow in confidence around the animals over the week - just the kind of thing we were hoping for at Hogchester!

We have stayed at Hogchester Cottage twice now, and can honestly say it was one of our most favourite holidays - a totally treasured experience. The Cottage itself is beautifully laid out & decorated, and the double bed is possibly the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The shelves are thoughtfully filled with things to keep the whole family entertained, if there could possibly be a time when we grew bored of the goats, or the swing, or exploring the fields & rivers, and finding a new breathtaking view, or gathering eggs, watching a barn owl swoop down the lane at dusk, or just sitting on a hill looking down the Bride Valley as it sweeps to Charmouth & the sea. We never did use the shelves!
Rob & Chantal are amazing hosts, and the welcome basket was so thoughtful & beautiful - full of local produce & the prettiest eggs. The work they have done on the land in the relatively short time they have been there is staggering.
Hogchester is perfect for families or couples, or anyone who wants to get away from it all, and enjoy proper peace (rest assured the wifi is there for the rest of real life). I really recommend getting up early to see the sunrise & staying late for the stargazing - the lack of light pollution means the sky is staggering.

From the moment we arrived we were greeted with the news that a new 'chick' had just been born and we should come and see it, and the holiday continued to get better from there! Being treated to a fantastic hamper on arrival that included a soft toy dinosaur as a welcome to the Jurassic coast, for my little boy, was a lovely thought. The cottage itself has everything you need for a great family holiday- including a few toys to keep the kids entertained. Being able to freely explore the 60 acre site was amazing and my son really enjoyed taking charge of feeding the goats, collecting the eggs and swinging in the tree. It was a real home from home. Great location and lots to explore in the area including Charmouth fossil hunting, sandcastles in Lyme Regis, fleet air museum and Sidmouth. Thanks for a great week of rest and relaxation - which is a miracle with a 3 year old!
