“Disappointed”

Found the welcome not very friendly. No information on how appliances work and when we asked the owner for the second time on how the cooker worked we were made to feel a complete nuisance. For a 5 star there was no information on nearest shops doctors dentist etc. Also only 5 logs given to burn on arrival any extra were charged at £3.50 a bag.All in all over priced for the time of year and for the ammenities. On a plus it was warm and the bath deep and luxurious. Having stayed in other 5 star self catering accomodation we found this one lacking.

“The Oak Barn - Stunning, peaceful, luxurious”
Reviewed 25 February 2010 for a stay in January 2010

I am somewhat reluctant to place this review as i want to keep the oak barn to myself !!

The oak barn is set in a wonderful peaceful location in the centre of Dartmoor, easy access to the wonders of Dartmoor and a short drive from the coast.

The barn itself is just wonderful, from the moment you walk through the large oak and glass front door, the warmth and quality of finish hits you.

The barn is set over two floors with the ground floor housing the two bedrooms. The double bedroom has a four poster bed, a devine ensuite and a sauna - which from experience i can tell you is a necessity after a long walk accross the moors.

The second bedroom has twin beds, ideal for children and also has an ensuite which mirrors the ensuite in the master bedroom.

The stairs taking you upstairs have been crafted to perfection, halfway up the stairs is a large window and i spent some time watching the chickens in the garden through this, quite therpeutic !!

Upstairs is an open plan kitchen/dining room and living space.

The kitchen has every mod con you would want, a huge cooker, quality cooking implements, a dishwasher but all sit neatly in the wooden surroundings.

The living area has a large television, but for me the icing on the cake was the wood burner, it was very cold in January when we were there and the wood burner was ideal to snuggle in front of. There is a large window in the living area which overlooks a field and often we would see cows or horses at the window - you can also see Widecombe church, which looks stunning lit up at night.

Everything about this cottage screams quality and perfection and Richard (the owner) has obviously put his best effort into ensuring the cottage gives visitors an experience never to be forgotten.

Will we be going back ?? - Without a doubt, try stopping us.

Once again also visited the Ruggle for a drink and meal and as always the locals made us feel welcome and the food was fab.

Must say thankyou to Richard and Lesley (the owners of the cottage) for making our weekend so special.

“Probually the best cottage for two in England.”
Reviewed 6 December 2009 for a stay in December 2009

If you like the feel and experience of living in your own cosy traditional stone and oak barn then this is the place for you. The quality of the renovation is outstanding with every attention to detail of a traditional oak framed building with loads of exposed beams two foot thick stone walls with the added benefit of draft free modern living environment. There is a log burner, under floor heating and a kitchen with granite work tops all coupled together with state of the art appliances. Only 350 meters away is a fabulous friendly pub (Rugglestone Inn) with stone floors and a warming log burner serving excellent food, local ales and cider. Only 350 meters further on past the pub is the village of Widicombe with local shops and plenty of chalm.

“The Oak Barn is probably the most luxurious holiday house we've ever experienced”
Reviewed 4 November 2009 for a stay in September 2009

The owners have hand crafted every detail to create probably the most luxurious holiday house ever experienced, which is fresh and modern, and yet has the character which comes with exposed oak beams, and is ideally located in the beautiful and tranquil heart of the Dartmoor Park. We were privileged to be Richard and Lesley’s first guests to enjoy the 5-star luxury of their stunningly rebuilt & restored Oak Barn, with its vast open plan living space, with top quality, solid hand made furniture, and yet opulent fabrics, cozy underfloor heating, and a log fire to top it all. The 2 bathrooms / wet rooms (en suite) can rival top spa’s, with free-standing baths, plus a sauna. The kitchen is fully equipped (complete with a couple of cases of wine), and if you can glance away from the gorgeous view over the rolling landscape, the living area is fitted with a large screen TV, Blue-Ray player (with dozens of DVD’s) and i-Pod connecting Hi-Fi. We loved Richard’s accomplishment on the Oak Barn so much we asked him to build us a house just the same. Just book it, its fantastic.

“Beautiful, luxurious, restful I cannot recommend this highly enough”
Reviewed 7 June 2009 for a stay in May 2009

This place exceeded my expectations even with the fantastic reviews already on trip advisor. The weather was good so was able to take advantage of large south facing lawn looking over dartmoor ponies in the fields beyond. The cottage itself is finished to such a high standard and it is all the little touches such as home baked bread and eggs from the hens that makes it extra special. There are lots of walks and lovely things to see nearby and the local pub (Rugglestone Inn)serves a mean fish pie and really is only 3 mins walk which was perfect.
We switched off and relaxed which is all you can ask for a holiday - thanks to Richard and Lesley for their helpful but unintrusive presence and for recommending a beach which had a shop selling fresh seafood which we had on a barbeque on the beach - it was great!
