“Rural bliss”
Reviewed 5 June 2016 for a stay in May 2016

The cottage exceeded our expectations. It is beautifully presented and decorated with a interesting mix of antique furniture with soft and comfortable sofas in the living room. There is even a television in each bedroom, though we didn't switch on either. The kitchen is well equipped and all the glassware, crockery and cutlery matches - often rental properties have a somewhat interesting assortment!

The views over the fields to Meldon moor was lovely and, in May, the wildflowers in the hedgerows and the buttercup carpeted fields were a visual treat.

Chagford is only about 5 minutes away by car and it offers a good variety of pubs and cafés. We even had an Indian takeaway one night. Basic groceries can be bought at the local Tesco and Chagford also boasts a butcher, a good deli, and a greengrocer. There is a Waitrose nearby in Okehamton.

“Beautiful cottage in the heart of Dartmoor”
Reviewed 30 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

This beautifully restored cottage which is part of the Outer Down estate is a perfect getaway to explore Dartmoor. My wife and i travelled with our 2 dogs, and the extensive grounds in the estate are beautiful for them to run around, sweeping down from the back of the main house to a stunning stream at the bottom of the gardens. The cottage has all you need, two spacious bedrooms, lounge, kitchen, dining room and bathroom and the owners even provide a 'welcome pack' with essentials such as bread, butter, milk, tea bags etc which was great. Chagford is about a 5 minute drive away where you can get any essentials you need. Would recommend this to anyone visiting Dartmoor and especially to dog owners.

“Excellent”
Reviewed 21 February 2016 for a stay in February 2016

Comfortable, stylish, warm, clean, generously equipped - Wi-fi, TVs in bedrooms, jolly good dishwasher.
Lovely views to Castle Drogo, glow of the lights of Exeter above the night skyline, beautiful grounds with wonderful wild, mossy, boulder strewn hillside leading down to the delightful South Teign river.
Secure field for exercising one's dog.
Two miles from the pretty little town of Chagford along classic narrow Devon lanes.
Friendly owners, to whom we extend our thanks.

Liked best: The buildings, location, furnishings, cleanliness, facilities, grounds... everything.
Liked least: I was slightly worried turning onto the lane from the drive. A mirror would be comforting.

“Luxury on the outskirts of Chagford”
Reviewed 13 January 2016 for a stay in January 2016

We have just returned from having a fantastic week at Down Cottage. From the first conversation with Judy who the cottage was booked through to saying goodbye to Steve the owner, I can't fault anything. You know it's a special place when arriving along a tree lined drive with the cottage directly ahead, an imposing water tower to your left and the amazing views towards Castle Drogo (although covered in scaffolding). The log burner was lit ready for arrival in the well appointed kitchen which was great after the drive from hell ( all was instantly forgotten). John came to see us a few moments after arrival to make sure we were alright.
The dining room on the ground floor across the hall from the kitchen was great. Plenty of space for guests who joined us for one evening around an amazing mahogany table (probably too good for a holiday cottage). After dinner we relaxed in the first floor sitting room. Plenty of space for six people.
Across the landing, a twin bedded room which was very comfortable and clean with plenty of storage space.
The main double bedroom has a large king sized bed which was very comfy. We slept very well during our stay. There was plenty of drawer and hanging space for clothes and coats.
The bathroom was also well fitted with a great sized bath with shower over and plenty of hot water.
This property has an array of wonderful antique furniture which adds to the feeling of luxury.
We are already talking about coming back in the Spring (we have friends who live nearby).

“Fantastic Country Cottage for relaxing break”
Reviewed 1 December 2015 for a stay in November 2015

From the moment we arrived we loved every minute of our stay at Down Cottage. This little gem is furnished to a very high standard with comfy chairs, sofas and especially the beds. There is an open fire and log burner to use, however the heating was more than adequate to keep us warm during our October stay. It has an excellent kitchen, but we didn't bother to cook as there are so many restaurants and pubs to choose from in the local village of Chagford. The grounds are exceptional and recommend you take time to have a look around. All in all a five star accommodation in a very beautiful part of the world.
