I visited the Yawkey Center with the idea of getting some good bird photo opportunities. The photo opportunities the day I was there were not what I hoped but the DNR guide who took our group around was a wealth of knowledge and made the trip worthwhile. We went to a number of locations on this wonderful piece of property and our guide was very knowledgeable about the property, its history, the animals and most certainly the birds. It was a delightful 1/2 day excursion. Another great feature: there is no charge for the visit but you do need reservations.

We were happily surprised to find that The Yawkey Wildlife Center is more open to visitors than in the past. They offer various theme trips now, under the leadership of Jim Lee. You can register for a 4 hour trip on line. With the limit to 14 people (van capacity) it makes for a wonderful learning experience. Jim is very knowledgeable about plant, animals, birds, and the island's history. He is an amazing speaker, and passionate about protecting and understanding all the habitats and wildlife of Yawkey Island, Cat Island etc.
My husband and I were on a March birding trip with 7 other people. It was a cold blustery day, but that didn't keep Jim's enthusiasm from showing through with each and every stop of our trip. We look forward to taking another trip to Yawkey with Jim to learn more about the beautiful wildlife area of Yawkey.

Today my wife and I, along with several other couples, had the pleasure of touring the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center. Mr Jim Lee, with SC DNR, took us to numerous destinations around Cat Island and South Island allowing us many opportunities to observe wildlife and also to learn a little history about the Wildlife Center. The tour groups are small and offer a more personalized interaction with the guide. We were able to leisurely spend time at each destination and learn about the wildlife and ecosystems of the island. We also learned about the residents of the island and the generosity of Tom Yawkey in preserving this beautiful habitat. We’ve already looked into future tours and we’ll definitely go back!

We were a group of 10 and came on a recommendation by a friend. We had made reservations, which are a must! The tour is limited to 14 people. It was an amazing day to tour this beautiful piece of land and see Bald Eagles, Alligators, Wood storks, Spoonbills and lots of other birds and explore the story of Tom Yawkey. To see the passion in our guide, Jim, on how this land and it's wildlife is being protected was very inspiring. We highly recommend taking this free tour and learn about southern history and preservation.

My husband & I found out about this place from one of our neighbors who spoke so highly of their experience. Well, we couldn't agree more! Jim Lee was our guide & truly an inspirational speaker for the 4 hours we spent touring this amazing place on a small bus that travels through acres and provides views of wildlife, nature, & the history behind this land that was donated by Tom Yawkey who owned the Boston Red Sox, but more than that was a great humanitarian as well as a humble man.
This is a DO NOT MISS destination for all ages and it will not disappoint!
