Could be so much better

Review of Paradise Cove
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 30 Sept 2015
My wife and I stayed for 2 nights.
First, the positives: The whole place is absolutely beautiful. We were in room 3 which was very comfortable and had stunning views from the balcony over the coast. The breakfasts were also excellent - beautifully presented and nice quality.
Now the negatives: We travel extensively all over the world and do our research but still rely on the local knowledge of our hosts. Unfortunately the manager on her own admission had very little knowledge of the area. She even described herself as a 'house mouse'. For example, she did not know about the slave tree which is one of the famous tourist sites in George. She also told us that she didn't like the Old Townhouse restaurant. Fortunately for us the German owners were staying at the same time and were able to give us a great amount of useful local advice, including a recommendation for the Old Townhouse which turned out to be superb (rated 7 out of 74 by Trip Advisor).
Other things that disappointed us were failure to replace a broken lightbulb in the bathroom, despite being told about it the day before; the manager decided whether we should take breakfast inside or outside - we were'nt given the choice; the Wi-Fi didn't work at all on my tablet (it has worked perfectly everywhere else in South Africa) and so on.
All little things that add up and spoil what could and should have been a fantastic experience if the main 'front of house' person had been more focussed on providing the range of services that guests require.
Date of stay: September 2015
Room Tip: If the German owners are not present, do your own research.

Thank you so much for your review and it is good to know that the room and the breakfast was very good. I am sorry that i offended you in anyway with my lack of knowledge but thank you that you place a review about it this way i can see your opinion and how you experienced It. I always welcome critism for that makes me work harder to be a better. I welcome you as our guests again in the future and may it be then that i will be a better host in your opinion.
kind regards
Tersia van der Meree

We again experienced Tertia and her team's welcoming and caring hospitality. The breakfasts were amazing and the stay was very comfortable even in mid winter. I already look forward to our next visit in this true paradise! Although this was a business trip we could easily stay here for many more days and explore the Garden Route.

Went to this amazing establishment for a solo breakaway and wow...was it worth it. Attention to detail...peace and quiet...very attentive staff...most amazing view from my cottage. Generous and beautifully presented breakfast. Really enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend Paradise Cove for any romantic getaway or just a little rejuvenation of the soul. Well done Tersia...you have created a real gem.

My husband and I spent a week here with our adult son. The location of Paradise cove proved to be excellent for us. Good access to Wilderness for a lovely walk round the lake, and a delicious lunch at Pomodora. A visit to the Sedgefield market on a Saturday morning and 2 rounds of golf. George itself is not far away, so we had some lovely meals at The Old Townhouse and La Campanina. The Mall is close by so we fitted in a movie. And Saasveld was close enough for our son to get to. Add to this the 5* breakfasts and very helpful management. Thanks Tersia for a lovely stay

Very comfortable (rather than luxurious) boutique B&B. Fabulous setting and views over Wilderness. Attractive thatched buildings and beautifully manicured grounds. Simple but smallish unheated pool (with no views and some basic loungers).

Great friendly service from the manager Tersia and the staff including beautifully presented breakfast in picturesque dining room, plus helpful tips/bookings etc.

Whilst not detracting too much from overall value for money, we felt charging a few Rand for WiFi was very petty indeed and no other B&B/restaurant we stayed in did this (how much can the owners really make from this, it must be more trouble than its worth; very petty/miserly). Maybe WiFi is not important to the retired owners (on the technology side they advertise TV but its very basic with no availability of programmes of interest to international travellers or DVD, and the music player came out of the Ark!). We appreciate these things may not be important to many travellers (and indeed were not to us ) but the owners advertise these as features and most of their competitors do much better.

Bathroom was clean and functional, if a little dated. Shower enclosure was basic and leaked water everywhere, so you do not get a luxurious bathroom feeling that many other B&Bs provide.

There things would not stop us staying there again because its an impressive setting and building, and Tersia does a great job, but they take a bit of the gloss off it. 4 stars not 5 in our opinion.

Paradise Cove is quite exceptional. It comprises 4 guest rooms each with its own personal patio looking over the lawn.
The dining room is a two minute walk and guests have the option of sitting indoors or outside on a patio.
Given its upmarket style, it was probably the most expensive of the six B&Bs that we stayed at, but it was unquestionably well worth it.
I am pleased to write that I won bonus points with my wife for the selection of this B&B. I think she thought that she had died and gone to heaven or that I had secretly won the lottery.

It is situated on a hill above Wilderness. The garden is immaculate and the furnishing of the rooms and the stand-alone breakfast room and patio is extremely tastefully done.

There is a very modern shopping centre about a mile down the road toward George which is certainly equal to or better than many that we have in Toronto.

The attention to detail in all respects was in a class of its own.
It is not an easy place to find, so be sure to bring instructions as to how to get there. I forgot and, as a result, we wasted 30+ minutes driving up and down the main road trying to find it
- even the local taxi/cab driver didn't know where it was.

Another word of caution: there are two speed radar cameras on the main highway between Paradise Cove and Wilderness. Since Wilderness has some very good restaurants, it would be a pity to spoil the day with a speeding ticket.

Be aware that the manager of the guesthouse has a dog. It is friendly, so unless you have a strong adversion to pets, this shouldn't be an issue.
I wouldn't recommend Paradise Cove for families with children under 14, unless they are exceptionally well behaved (do such creatures exist anymore?)
