Owner description: The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic houses one of the world's largest collections of items relating to witchcraft, the occult and magic. With over 3000 objects, a wise woman's cottage, a herb garden and a shrine it is a memorable place. It has been in the picturesque Cornish coastal village of Boscastle since 1961 and is one of Cornwall's most popular museums rated highly on TripAdvisor. The Museum intrigues visitors with its collections of charms, curses, herbs and healing and sea witchcraft. Some of our most popular items are magical tools such as glass knitting needles, objects which were used for scrying such as black mirrors, crystals and crystal balls and our collection of protection talismans made by soldiers in the trenches of World War One. The Museum also has an extensive library with other 7000 books and an archive of documents which can be viewed online or visited by appointment.

This has to be the largest collection of witchcraft I have ever come across. It is one of the most informative collections I have ever seen and gives you a true sense of the history behind the practice. It's lovely to have the space at the end of the tour to sit quietly and contemplate those who have passed and to read the wishes of those that have been before on the board. Definitely a place to visit if you're in the area.

Very interesting visit. Lots to see and learn. Check opening times before you visit. Plenty of unusual items to purchase if you so wish.

OUR ANNUAL VISIT to this quirky little museum, but a little disappointed this time,it was a couple of days before the summer solstice, and I thought there may have been something special on, there was apparently a new display since last year, maybe its our fault for going too often, but it is still a special little museum, good value for money.
We went back to the village a couple of days later and they were preparing for the midsummer festival ,

Thanks for your ongoing support of the Museum and for taking the time to write a review.

We had a major event to celebrate Midsummer on the Saturday nearest to it (June 23rd). We do have seasonal events but we don't normally have them midweek (this is when the Solstice was) as it can be difficult for people to get to them and we want to make our events as accessible as possible. All our events are advertised well ahead of time should you wish to plan your next visit to coincide with one. They appear on our website, our facebook events page, on twitter and in our Events booklet (which you can pick up here when you visit).
We spent about three months working on new displays in the Museum this year including an exhibition for 2018 called Dew of Heaven: Objects of Ritual Magic (most of the objects haven't been on display for over 20 years so definitely something new to see). We also took items from Snowshill Manor out of store (they haven't been on display together for about 3 years and we also discovered some new objects from this collection which are now displayed with the other pieces). Our Mandrake cabinet and our cursing display were completely revamped as was our Divination and Scrying section. The major change was that we created a completely new cabinet in our Witchcraft Today gallery which doubled the number of objects we can show there. We were so pleased to get so many pieces out of store in this new area to create displays on the Northern Tradition, the Egyptian influence on witchcraft, robes, headdresses, gemstones etc. etc. There really is a lot more on display in this area that in previous years.
If you were to visit the Museum again in future, please do let us know that you are here so we can highlight and discuss these displays with you. We will be changing our exhibition space again this year so there will be definitely be something new to see in 2019 too. Hope to see you here again sometime soon.

A shadow of it's former self. The catastrophic floods of a few years ago, seem to have taken away it's magic.
It's nice, sort of informative, but the soul of the place has gone.

Don't get me wrong, it has plenty of exhibits and is informative.
I would not go back there, unless doing a bit more research.

The owners have done what they can with with what they have left and is a pleasant place to while away an hour, or two.

Thank-you for visiting the Museum and for taking the time to write this review. We are sorry that you feel like the flood has taken away the soul or magic of the place.
While the 2004 flood was devastating, we didn't actually lose that many items and since then the collection has grown to over 4000 objects. If you lasted visited before the flood of 2004, then you will have noticed many changes as it has been nearly 14 years.
In recent years, the Museum team have invested heavily in terms of time and money in the building and displays. The focus has been on maintaining an old building, conserving, re-displaying and re-interpreting the exhibits in line with current research.
A lot of Museums seem to stand still and rest on their laurels and as we are completely independent, receiving no government subsidies and entirely dependent on visitor numbers, we are actively trying not to do this by re-imagining different areas of the Museum and providing an exhibition space which changes every year. In this way, we hope to offer something different for people who visit us for the first or for the hundredth time. While we can't please everyone, we are getting a lot of positive comments and repeat visitors and we are a lot busier than we were before the flood (all of which means the future of the Museum is secure).
If you were to visit again, please do speak to the person at the desk and ask to speak to the Manager as I would happily talk this through with you in person.
