A whole block of the downtown/old town Portland was constructed as an ancient Chinese Scholar garden, named as Lan Su; If you ever read GOMBRICH's History about the World book, he wrote that China was the only country ruled by scholars. The Lan Su Chinese garden was an exact replicate of such ancient scholar's living quarter; You will find a "book house" where ink, brush, paper are presented for the scholars to practice calligraphy, poem, and paintings; If you love Monet's Lilies pond oil painting, inspired by the Japanese Water Lilies pond, they were originated from China, as you can enjoy viewing the Water Lilies pond filled with Koi fishes inside the Lan Su garden.
Sadly, developers and local government officials have changed local construction height constraints, so, they can build more taller buildings, the landscape around Lan Su garden will only getting grayer, so don't wait for that time, visit the garden today!

These gardens essentially occupy a block in the old "Chinatown" area of Portland. Beautiful plants, great water gardens, and a very nice teahouse with many varieties of tea. Enjoy!

This garden is a perfect place to stop in and relax in the middle of the busy city. The garden is well-maintained and they offer a assortment of events for people to attend. The garden also has a café and tea shop where you can purchase authentic items. Visiting was a little pricey at $20 for two ppl. They did not offer educator discounts which is unfortunate.

Be absolutely sure to include a visit to the Chinese gardens in Portland Oregon. The amazing and intricate architecture is a shining example of the skill and craftsmanship of its makers. You'll be inspired. And the gardens are so incredibly tranquil.

This as a nice thing to do to pass the time, but for the price, it was a little less enthralling for me. Maybe i'm spoilt as I've seen many oriental gardens from Hong Kong and Singapore? But, it was very quiet and the location was kind of weird, it was difficult to take some pictures without a high rise building in the background for some pictures. You can get around the place in 30 minutes easily!
