We had reserved for a dozen on Friday night and eighteen finally drifted in. The staff handled the unexpected additions with good nature and resourcefulness. The place was quite packed, but the kitchen appeared to be up to the challenge. Everyone seemed to be happy with what they ordered. Lots of complimentary appetizers and bread were served family style.

we were there for an early dinner, not greatly hungry, but they let us split the meal, which was just the right proportion. NY Steak dinner -steak was the best part but on the whole the meal hit the spot. Romantic ambiance in an old VFW building (that chapter still meets upstairs), '40s boogie music. We understand there is live music a couple times a week. For a town the size of La Grande, this is a much better than average, local eatery.

Walking into the door of Ten Depoe is filled with soft lighting, rustic atmosphere upon arriving at the first opening hour of the night. Seated by the host in a booth upon our request, we received a small appetizer, slices of chewy rustic bread, and a server asking if we wanted a drink before ordering . Saying no, a full dinner menu was provided a few minutes later. Since it had been many, many years since dining there, we looked over a growing menu filled with many steak, fish, pasta choices as well as sandwiches, finally choosing 2 12 oz. New York steaks, baked potatoes, which came with a small, but chilled dinner salad, and a small ( very petite)bundle of green beans.
Excited to cut into a nicely cooked steak from outward appearances, we both were greeted with a steak that took our breath away. Sadly, not from flavor, because there was none to speak of. Seems as the cook forgot to season both steaks..but after doctoring ours ourselves, we cut a piece and began to chew..and chew, and chew...gristle.. Very disappointed, leaving half of a $32 dollar steak right on my plate as we waited for a server, ANY server to replenish our water glass in order to swallow that difficult piece of rawhide.
My fault I suppose for not reading all comments about the cook or food choices..lesson learned once ...so maybe the owner, who has owned it many, many years, should concentrate on finding better ( and more experienced ) choice of cooks/ servers who pay attention to detail and customers rather than growing a menu with more choices which might be also challenged in the tasting..
It took us over 15 years to go back to Ten Depoe from our last visit, so wonder how many more it would be to find a nice steak and glass of refilled water? ( sorry for the negative comment but last nights quality dining experience certainly was lost somewhere in that soft lit building filled with rushed servers scurrying to a few other patrons at an early dinner hour.)

We really like the ambience and menu here. However, the cook clearly lacked the skills to pull it off. Our fish was hard & dry, even the salmon. One person's salmon serving was larger & much more fresh than the other person's order. None of our vegetables were cooked enough to be able to chew. Other items were better, including dessert. The wait staff seemed nice, but inexperienced. We chose not to return.

Antique style décor that was warm and welcoming. The service was very good and when I requested salmon medium rare, that is exactly how it was prepared. Everything was very tasty and the wine list was reasonably priced. A very pleasant dining experience.
