Review of Whitgift Centre

Whitgift Centre
Ranked #3 of 9 Shopping in Croydon
Attraction details
Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Seems to be the main shopping centre in Croydon and has probably seen better days as other reviewers have mentioned. There quite a few shops that have closed especially at the pedestrian tunnel end. It's not a very welcoming sight. Generally, there are any special shops to make you want to come here. There's just the usual, standard high street chains, plus a few local shops and stalls.

The food court area is okay, again nothing special.

There's nothing really wrong with Whitgift and it's fine for a bit of shopping. With no unique shopping to attract extra-ordinary customers, I wouldn't go out of the way to visit..
Location wise, it's pretty much in the centre of Croydon and only 3 minutes walk from East Croydon station.

Lots of empty shops and building looks tired. Overdue a refresh. Only good thing is convenient, but expensive parking.

You can find a good choice of shops. It is situated close to East Croydon station which has good connection to Gatwick Airport.

With Westfield on the horizon many leases must have finished/not been renewed, as there seem to be more and more empty premises. Marks and Spencer is the only department store (although Centrale shopping centre is literally 20feet away & has Debenhams and House of Fraser). There is still a fair range of shops but definitely lacking the quality & buzz it used to have.

Sadly, I remember when the Whitgift Centre was new, shiny and trendy. My first job after university (many years ago) was in Croydon and this was the place to go to eat and shop. There were also two department stores in Croydon - Allders and Grants - which have since gone.

Given what we are now used to the quality of shopping centres such as Westfield in Stratford and Shepherds Bush, the redevelopment of this centre is long overdue.

I have to admit I walked through it quickly and didn't go into one shop.
