Despite often poring and procrastinating over Tripadvisor reviews before deciding on holiday accommodation, our decision to book the Bamburgh Barn ended up being a fairly swift one!
We had decided at the end of last year to have a holiday in Northumberland - the centrepiece of our holiday being a much-anticipated trip to the Farne Islands. What better place to stay than Bamburgh, the ancient capital of Northumbria - which is just 3.5 miles down the road to Seahouses - the jumping off point for the boat trips to the islands.
Bamburgh is only a small place, so when browsing our options, the Bamburgh Barn really stood out to us. At £1,200 for a 7 night Saturday to Saturday stay, plus £250 (refundable) damage deposit, this wouldn't be a cheap stay. However, the way we looked at it was the per person, per night cost of £34.28 actually represented excellent value for money.
The owners advance e-mailed us some excellent pictorial directions so we knew exactly where we needed to go when we arrived by car into Bamburgh. We'd also been provided with details for the key safe well in advance so no problems there.
We were lucky that no one had stayed in the barn the night before our arrival so we actually checked in at 1:30pm - a good few hours ahead of the scheduled time so this meant we were able to get comfortable straight away.
The barn advertises space for 3 cars. Please note, all cars have to line up longitudinally behind each other in the gravel driveway which is protected by secure electric gates.
Upon arrival, the owners had very kindly left some provisions in a welcome pack. Tetley tea bags, instant Nescafe sachets, mini packs of Haribo sweets and flumps, 6 individually packed Borders biscuits and a lovely crusty uncut loaf of bread. The fridge also had a packet of butter and 2 pints of milk. I've stayed in cottages before where there is absolutely nothing there for your arrival so this was a really lovely touch and very much appreciated!
It's worth mentioning at this point that the kitchen as a whole is wonderfully stocked. There is plenty of cutlery and serving utensils (no pizza slice that we could see so that might be a suggestion but I'm sure you'll agree, that's pretty non-urgent!) Loads of plates, bowls, mugs and glasses (no prosecco glasses that we could see so again, that might be another suggestion, but we brought our own so again, it wasn't an issue). Plenty of pots and pans, colanders, cheese grater etc. There was even some foil, cling film, washing up liquid etc- you never know whether some of these things may just be left by previous guests but we were grateful for them and made good use of them!
I recommend all guests to read the Welcome literature - I am a complete geek for a well written one - and the Bamburgh Barn one tells you everything you need to know and is funny at the same time! It's very useful for things like the TV if you're not familiar with the set up and also the NEST central heating system. It also ensures that you follow the correct process with recycling/garbage collection bins.
The kitchen, dining and main living area are all in the same space which is great. My sister and I would be able to cook in the kitchen each evening and shout across to the family who were all in the living area and then we would all eat together on the sofas. I loved the large, square, low coffee table in the living room. It was also nice to see a book shelf and I managed to get a bit of reading done in my down time. The owners encourage you to take away a book if you haven't yet finished it before your holiday ends and/or leave a book behind of your own that you no longer need.
The bedrooms are all immaculate. Only one double room and two twin rooms which may be an issue if all adults are couples but we managed. Each room is en suite to a very high spec with gorgeous power shower. The rear twin room has a bath as well. There's hanging space in each room, spacious chests of drawers, bedside cabinets/tables, lamps, and the beds are really cosy! What I particularly loved about being in the rear twin room were the skylights. The sun was rising at about 4:30am and I don't think I needed to switch the light on once in my room as there was so much natural light flooding in.
Thick, high quality white towels are provided (bath towel, hand towel and flannel).
There is a washing machine/dryer in a utility cupboard in the hall which we didn't use, but there were some useful things in the cupboard which some people may have been really glad of (everything from buckets and spades to boxes of matches etc so it's worth having a good look around, the owners really have thought of everything!)
We made use of the dishwasher daily and there were tablets available for us to use.
The views of the castle are not over-exaggerated. You can literally see the entire side of the castle via the three double patio doors that line the living/dining/kitchen area. It's absolutely spectacular. It was very misty and cloudy during our stay and some days we could see the castle and other days, it was completely shrouded in grey - then half an hour later it would all change again!!
Location wise, you step out of the front door, walk around the corner, and the beautiful Castle Green (superb for people watching) is right there with the castle alongside it. There are shops that sell coffee, sandwiches, ice creams, basic provisions, some pubs/restaurants etc all within a few hundred yards.
If you're looking for a comfortable, perfectly located holiday rental with all mod cons, look no further than the Bamburgh Barn!
My son and his wife stayed had stayed here before and kindly took us. All the reviews are right ! The barn is immaculate. The location in the centre of beautiful bamburgh is perfect.
We were so lucky the weather was sunny and bright and we sat out on the deck for breakfast looking at the castle . Just a perfect break.
Thank you for introducing us to the amazing northumberland coast and allowing us to stay in a gorgeous barn.
Hope to return next year .
From the ease of booking to the moment we left , everything was really good .
Previous reviews cover it all . Perfect place for a few days away and Bamburgh is a beautiful place with lots of walks, great places to visit and a cozy, modern barn to return to in the evening .
Reviews are all great - we’ll deserved! The Barn has a world class view; is located within a short walk of a world class beach; and is itself beautifully appointed to guarantee a very enjoyable & comfortable stay. There is no skimping on any front.
Comms with owner are timely, friendly and clear.
To “top” things off - we had huge bright blue skies to walk under.
Blimey! Who wouldn’t come here?
